the only thing i havent done yet to see if it imporves my sense of smell and makes my nose a little bit more wet is allergy meds. any thoughts on this?

Do you have allergies or just want to take OTC anti-histamines to see if they improve your symptoms?    I have seasonal (mostly in spring + early summer) allergies to grass and tree pollen.    I do take Zyrtec for this and find it helps open the sinus passages and cut down on mucus production in the nose.  

It might help, but I would recommend you see a Dr to pinpoint the cause rather than take a shotgun approach to try and treat symptoms.
