anyone know if/where i can get any air-cured rustica?
I havent seen any specifically air cured , i am looking to buy some off http://www.salvialight.com/nicotiana-rustica.htm , after the new year
http://www.kalyx.com/shopexd.asp?id=1209936 http://www.kalyx.com/shopexd.asp?id=1219157 Basement shaman sent me these links a while ago.
Rustica has been known as poor mans tobacco. It is harsh and has excessive unwanted alkaloids. It is almost always inexpensively air cured. It has found it’s way into cheap snus and shisha. It’s a novelty really as its historical use by shamans has attracted the attention of quite a few. Care should be taken with its use due to the MAOI levels which can cause panic attacks as well as effect those taking prescription antidepressants… IMHO

ah really, thanks for letting me know. what is a strong tobacco next after rustica?
I don’t mean to discourage the use of Rustica which has huge potential, especially for snuff. Its strength makes alkalizers unnecessary and the MAOI’s hold promising self medication secrets. Burley tobacco is strong and much easier to work with and also easier to source. Look up whole leaf tobacco. Amazon.com even has a guy that sells some.
thanks Juxtaposer… i will look into getting some Burley
It is a serious plant and needs to be treated with such , it is a nightshade after all. I ONLY us it in blends never on its own, its not to tasty.
I like to use the Mapacho (Salvialight) Rustica for snuff, nice looking leaf all rolled up. The cure is real nice and it has a good flavor, only bad thing is a pronounced drip from all Rustica. I miss the Thuc Lao, that is real interesting stuff.
Whalen- In case you weren’t aware, there are still places to get Thuoc Lao. But the prices aren’t as good as Toque’s was. Also one place has the traditional bamboo water pipe used with it. If you’re interested I can try to find the business.
I think I will use Quit for some experiments. The Thuoc Lao I want to try smoking though.
I can second that - Quit is in most of my personal, home use blends. I don’t know why but I have drifted into never using my bought snuffs straight up, I always blend. At the minute it’s Navy Sweet with Quit and a couple of WoS snuffs; SP and Sherry. Quit gives it a nice kick.
If anybody wants air-cured rustica please PM me.I
The other thing to think about is our Quit. It is a stemless natural high nicotine snuff that a lot of amateur snuff makers/blenders use as their base flour.
hi Roderick, is it air-cured? and low in TSNAs?
thanks Roderick! how do you go about testing for TSNA levels then?
ok hehe

Should all of this be in quotes, I’ve read all of this on other sites and information resources, lots of anecdotal evidence. I would say if you can find a source have at it
I just googled what you quoted me saying and got this as the next result down from the quote of your quote of what I said. ftp://inethub.olvi.net.ua/Library/share/Agriculture/Cultures/Tobacco%20in%20History%20and%20Culture/Tobacco%20in%20History%20and%20Culture%20-%20Vol.2%20Native%20Americans%20Zimbabwe.pdf @smokinjoescbr I think “poor mans tobacco” should be in quotes now that you mention it. This quote really applies to the use of Rustica as smoking tobacco but it does infer to the ease of which this type grows and the prolific nature of its seeding. By the way I personally have had panic attacks as a result of a pure Rustica snuff. Anecdotal evidence? Yes, I agree.
Wow! that article is a wealth of information, I’ll have to take some time and browse through it tonight. Panic attacks from pure rustica… I will have to be careful when I get a chance to sample some.
Certainly worth sampling. Those who are sensitive or have a predisposition for panic attacks would be most at risk. Those taking prescription MAOI’s would be advised to avoid. Those taking Abraxis are already exposed, albeit Nigel says he does not use alkalizers so the harmine and harmaline absorption levels aren’t going to be as wicked. Anyone not having such sensitivity is sure to enjoy the alkaloids in Rustica.
Thanks for that link Juxtaposer! Amazing read!
@lunecat , i bought very similar/identical from bouncingbearbotanicals.com, i think it may be a sister site. It is not aircured, i would say its a plug style- very moist, dense, and cured/fermented. I have been chopping it and rolling it, quite satisfying. My log was around $20 including shipping, and was quite a large chunk of heady goodness I was wondering if anyone knew, is Rustica hindered by the same laws as regular tobacco? Being a slightly different plant, i was curious.
I grew three small plants ,started way too late .I don’t think it has time to flower.I think I mix it with klip dagga and Catnip buds for synergy.
We have lots of Rustica if anyone wants to buy some. Just email me and I’ll send it out.
Hi Roderick, have you thought of making a snuff that was all Rustica?
^ I think it would blend well with orange or vanilla. A lot of other things might contrast with that robust rustica scent.
But that would result in you finally making a strong snuff, and we all know Roderick was bitten by a strong snuff as a child and has an aversion…
Tonka beans and rustica get along very well
Yeah, Tonka is even better than vanilla.
mmm tonka/rustica, call it “blend 2971” or “elmo’s unreserved”
Also I vote for a medium or coarse grind, that way the goodness will be released more slowly. Also I think orange would be nice, but never the less the die has been cast, rustica it is
I’ve been mixing rustica with Toque SP Extra and it is extra nice. The rustica has almost no scent, but adds a new dimension to the SP, making it a little less intense in the scent dept, but a little stronger in the nicotine or whatever alkaloids are in the rustica. I have read the stuff about panic attacks, but I don’t overdo it, so as yet, I haven’t experienced any unusual side effects.
Try classifieds at howtogrowtobacco.com probably some for sale/trade
I have both fin and coarse ground Toque Rustica. Alone, I find them rather bland, but mixing them in with other snuffs makes them better in my opinion. I am growing “hopi” indian tobacco this spring. I have started them in my window, but will have to wait for the weather to get warm before transplanting outside. And to one of the above posts: I put a giant tonka bean in my rustica coarse, and it has made it a lot nicer.
I like the rustica as it is now still offered by Toque. It is good pure, no panic attacks here or any other issues. That is a little exaggerated! And the scent is quite flowery by itself, I don’t mix it. The snuff itself isn’t that strong too take, but the effect of the tobacco is better to feel as with the regular tobacco. To me it is relaxing/calming, gives open mind and increases alertness. Not too big pinches since it has the side effect of giving a slight dizziness. I think that will fade away as you take it more often, it is the same effect much of us remember “when taking their first cigarette”. But when you are only sitting or lying down you don’t pay attention to a little dizziness. @Roderick in what way is this a “limited edition”? Could you acquire a bunch of rustica only once, or will you continue to stock the 50gr rustica bags?
I have a bunch a rustica in my barn that I grew this summer. I tried to make snuff with it, but it tasted too green. I am hoping it will taste better after I pack it away for the winter. The Toque Rustica, that tastes different to me. Very mild and earthy, lots on nicotine, but I find it pretty bland.

I agree @Salmiak, I bought some rustica (fin) from Toque for blending purposes, but really like to take it plain. It has a wonderful sweet, herbal aroma, a bit hard to explain, really. I find the nicotine release perhaps slower than most other snuffs but it’s not anything overwhelmingly powerful, IMO.
I have seeds, if you think they will arrive ok let me know if anyone wants any. I’m in Australia, might be a problem to get them sent overseas, I am not sure.
