Hi everyone, I’m very new to snuff, knew about it when I was young but only got into snuffing about a month ago. A good friend introduced me to Toque snuff which I tried and then bought a selection of, some toasts and some regular untoasted. I also bought a good selection of Schmalzlers by Poschl and Bernard. I find the Toque snuffs easy to enjoy, but I am finding the Schmalzlers difficult to get used to because of what I can only describe as a heavy feeling in the nose after use. I read that English snuff is less likely to be heavy because of what is used to keep them moist as opposed to German styles which seem to have oil in them? I would appreciate some advice on what other types or brands to try if I like Toque? I’m also interested if anyone here also finds Schmalzlers a little overpowering? I love the scent of the latter but there is an …aftertaste? Many thanks!
Wilsons of Sharrow and mc chrystal may be worth a shot.
@Gunnar I’m with you on the Schmalzlers. Well made with good ingredients, they aren’t a regular part of my rotation for the very reason you mentioned. I still have a few in my collection and enjoy them occasionally, but not often. Toque is wonderful snuff, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. You should give Wilsons of Sharrow, Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith snuffs a try, being careful to steer toward the finer mill and medium moisture offerings. S. Gawith Black Rappee and its cousins are pretty coarse, moist and tough to indulge. I love them and they get a good workout around here, but they do take some practice. You also can’t go wrong with a good toast. Just make sure you practice your technique to keep the goodies from invading your sinuses, throat and lungs. Sparrow and Sparrow Cool by Dholokia are good too, but not toasts, per se. Other Indian snuffs you might like are the Madras style, especially NB. Nico Bombs Away! Hope this helps. Cheers
If Toque is agreeing with you in terms of grind and moisture then that would suggest to me that you could dive into pretty much any English snuff. The major question will be flavouring rather than grind or ease of snuffing. The major makers are Wilson’s of Sharrow, Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth, and Mr Snuff stocks all of them! There are also some other brands notable for one particular snuff - Hedges, J & H Wilson SP No.1 and McChrystal’s Original and Genuine. With the schmalzlers, I think I know what you mean about the ‘aftertaste’. Two suggestions here: first, if you like menthol then you might try Bernard’s Zweifacher, which is a schmalzler/menthol mix; second, don’t give up on the plain schmalzler until you have tried Sterneker Echt Fresko. All the Poschl and Bernard offerings taste to me as if they are flavoured in some way or other, but Echt Fresko is completely plain. Have fun!
Much appreciated one and all, I have a great place to start now!
I wanted to update everyone who was kind enough to offer advice to me. I ordered the following from MrSnuff: * McChrystal’s Original and Genuine * Viking Blonde * Gawith Scented Kendal Brown * Sam Gawith Apple * Wilsons Sunset The McC O&G was very nice, didn’t realise I bought the 4.4 gram tin, so tiny! Easy to take and the menthol isn’t overpowered. The Viking Blonde was a nice big can, I think it’s a 25 gram tin. Very easy to take, smells like biscuits which I like. The Scented Kendal Brown was quite good, but I would have to say I prefer Toque Berwick Brown over it - the latter smells of my Tabac shave soap which is ironic The SG Apple was a bit of a let down, I tried hard to detect the apple but it was very feint. It seems to be the same base as Viking Blonde and in a blind test I would definitely struggle to tell the difference. Sunset was an interesting experience, first non-tobacco snuff I have ever tried. I think it’s supposed to be an energy snuff, and it smells lovely. I am considering an Indian snuff and am not sure what would be a good representation of one? I hope that isn’t a silly question. I was looking at Dholakia Sparrow. I appreciate all the help I’ve had since joining this forum. I am leaning towards Toque at the moment, but I am enjoying discovering new types even if I don’t take to them.
The Dholakia Sparrow is very fine and dry with a great natural tobacco scent and lots of nicotine, one of my favourites… It’s a bit difficult to take so just keep that in mind. For a scented Indian snuff I like 41 Photo Himtaj Golden and 6 Photo Kailash. Both have the great exotic Indian scenting with just a touch of menthol.
Crullers is spot on with the suggestion of Himtaj Golden and Kailash, both are lovely. If you fancy a kind of Indian version of what bubblegum smells like try Dholakia Taj, that one’s very nice. In fact now I’ve thought of it I’m going to have to go and have a pinch…
I’ll add 6 Photo Natural. It’s easy to take, fairly neutral in scent, and has a good amount of nicotine. Make sure to try F&T HDT as well. If you like Toque then you should enjoy both of these recommendations. I’m new too, but I like all of the Toque offerings I have tried and find both recommendations in the same ballpark.
I’m building up an order list for Mr Snuff Thanks so much for the advice, I now have a better idea of what to look for.
I received my most recent order from MrSnuff: * 6 Photo Kailash * 41 Photo Golden Himtaj * Viking Dark * McChrystal’s Mild Lemon * Bernard Weinachtpris * Wilsons Cinnamon * Wilsons Grand Cairo * Wilsons Lemon Toast * Wilsons Lavender The Kailash is great, very aromatic and is like nothing else in my collection, what a colour too! The Himtaj is lovely, nice exotic aroma, light and easy to take. I was initially not sure about the Viking Dark, but I tried it again today and the smell reminds me a little of molasses. The Mild Lemon is fantastic, I am already planning to get more as I think the tin I have won’t last long. The Weinachtpris has a festive aroma, but is a little heavier than I am used to. The cinnamon is subtle and I can see myself mixing it with something else. I really like the Grand Cairo! Smells great and is strong. The Lemon Toast was a little underwhelming but I am comparing it to the Mild Lemon (and possible Toque’s Lime Toast), possibly unfairly so. The Lavender smells lovely, definitely an evening or early morning snuff. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions!
You got a good mix of snuffs there, Gunnar, mostly light and fine. If you like that type try McChrystal’s Hopfen - it’s scented, as you might guess, with hops, and up until a recent addition from a German snuffmaker there was no other snuff quite like it. It’s really nice, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t like the taste of beer!
If you fancy a kind of Indian version of what bubblegum smells like try Dholakia Taj, that one’s very nice.
Sorry to derail this thread, but do the rest of you agree with this assessment? I’m putting together an order of heavily scented Indian snuffs after digging on Kailash, but I hate the smell/taste of bubblegum in my tobacco (looking at YOU, Jakobsson’s so-called Melon!). I’d hoped it was more of a musk/incense scent.

I personally don’t get the bubblegum reference at all. But I guess bubblegum can be flavored with almost anything. I get little menthol and a lot of patchouli and some other “Indian incense” aromas. I don’t detect any musk in it. My current tin is little different (perhaps a bit sweeter and maybe less natural) from the previous ones, but still very enjoyable. The aromas are fairly strong and I have been told, detectable by others. I often take it in the evening because I feel it has a calming effect on me. Cartman would probably hate this snuff due to the heavy patchouli.
@Jari_T - I just ordered the big 50 g jar of Taj; was only available in small 10g before. I am hoping it don’t smell of bubble gum
@Gunnar that’s quite an assortment you’ve put together! Glad to hear you got O&G; it was my first (cue Foreigner’s “Feels like the first time”) and will always be one of my favorites. If you’re looking for a moister Indian snuff (many seem to be fine and dry) I strongly suggest 6 Photo Anarkali. It’s floral, very much reminds me of a spring day in the tropics. I’ll cast an extra vote for Sparrow which, in my experience, is a relatively easy white snuff. If you want to go for the gold (read: nicotine punch) you need to try either Dholakia White or 41 Photo White Elephant. They’re not the easiest to take, but well worth it if you need to wake up and wake up FAST.
