I’ve used snuff on and off for a few years, but with the recent developments regarding the snus ban I’m looking to use snuff more, but I have a problem.

If I’m using snuff all day Best SP and Tom Buck as good as they are make me chesty no matter what my technique but Radford Premium or Bernard snuffs do not. The only problem with Bernard snuffs is they tend to be too drippy to use at work whereas Radford Premium is not.

What I would like from you chaps is to tell me snuffs that I can buy in Britain primarily that are not drippy and that are coarse enough to not go to my throat.

Thank you.

That’s not as easy as it sounds because we all react to snuff differently and a drippy snuff for me might not be for you. The advice I always give is that (usually) the drier and plainer the snuff the less drips and congestion. You might find using snuffs like Toque natural or plain toast, or McCrystals S’nuff gives you less drip. It’s really a case of experimenting. The two you mention would clog me up for days, so there really is no easy answer.

Buying in Britain - to do that in person you would have to be near one of the few remaining genuine tobacconists who keep a good stock with a turnover sufficient to ensure the products on their shelves have not sat there for years - and frankly that will be hard, even with the best of them. Better to buy direct from the company - it ensures that the snuff is fresh, because stale snuff is awful - and you might not realise it is stale if you get it from a shop because you won’t have a frame of reference. I buy from Toque and Wilson’s of Sharrow who are both in Britain and have a great range of traditional snuffs. Mr Snuff sells out of Northern Ireland and has a great selection. Read some reviews and experiment.

Brunswick, Princes, Black Rappee, Red Rappee, London Brown, and Kendal Brown, for starters as recommendations. I would also recommend you learn how to blow your nose properly as in snuff, run, blow and done.

P

^ good advice. My choice for a “quicky”, two pinches of Viking Brown in each nose hole, minute or two later blow.

C

Thanks gents. Viking brown interests me a lot.

I should be more specific.
I’m looking for a snuff that has the same consistency as the Poschl’s like Radford Premium, President and Redbull. The only problem with the Poschl is that it’s nice to get away from the menthol now and again. Any suggestions?

T

Six photo natural has a similar consistency to a German snuff but without menthol.

A

Toque Silver Dollar has a good plain snuff; natural. The SD range is a response to the market held by Poschl. I think some of the Dholakia snuffs might be worth a go as well - the have some very dry plain and perfumed snuffs that I never get a drip from.

C

Thanks a lot for that. I’ll have a good look at those.

Virginie, gekacheliter from bernards. Though warning it’s really leathery and awesome and if you don’t like leather or the smell of awesome it will be to pungent. Cause damn it’s a pungent snuff.

B

also it smells a lot like drum does in the pouch. Better but it’s got something similar in it.
