adding sweetness to homemade snuff

anyone got any idea how i would go about adding sweetness to my homemade snuff? Aiming to add whiskey and honey to the smoky thuoc lao i have. Any ideas welcome and happy xmas everyone

I really like my tonka bean snuff that I made with Toque Natural and adding one tonka bean.

Put some sugar into it.

Pixie Stix - it also adds fruity flavors

Kool Aid, then you can lick your upper lip when you have a runny nose.

Mix a little Honey Bee snuff into it. It gives a nice molasses and honey sweetness.

That’s what I was thinking… The ‘sweet’ snuffs are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!11!!! too sweet for me, so adding just a bit of sweet snuff would temper any snuff with a ‘bit’ of sweetness.

Where would you get tonka beans? Do any stores in the US sell them? I heard they were outlawed here in the 50s, due to some junk science.

They are perfectly legal in the USA, as long as you do not use them in food. I contacted a seller on eBay who was selling broken beans and asked for whole beans. That person is still selling them in 1 oz., 4 oz., and 1 lb quantities (you’ll find it under a search for “tonka beans”). The unbroken beans were of excellent quality, and I would buy more form that person again, but the 4 oz. that I bought will last years. They are food grade, even though there is the legal disclaimer not to use this in food…blah, blah, blah, FDA, blah.

Actually, you can legally use them in food, but manufacturers and vendors may not. I get mine from http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/

Interesting, I id not think that they could be sold with intent to be put into food here. We did get that thujone ban lifted a few years ago…it was considered a “toxin.” So many odd categories of restrictions.

What’s a tonka bean?

^^ aka Tonquin bean. A fragrant bean that’s something like vanilla. That’s a good question for wikipedia, really.

Cheers Xander. I was being lazy not googling that question. :o

So how is the tonka bean used when flavoring snuff? Just pack the snuff around it for a time?

Traditionally a tonka bean was thrown into a snuff box for humidity besides that fantastic aroma. I also recommend using a piece of vanilla bean. Others have made suggestions about things that would also be good too. My favorite is a vanilla bean in an American Scotch snuff. It takes the dry edge off and really brings out some fine tobacco scents.

That sounds great! I’m going to track down a vanilla bean this weekend and start shopping for tonka beans. Thanks!

Dissolve 1 or 2 fl oz of honey in a half pint of whiskey and put it in a spray bottle. Mist your leaf thoroughly with this and let it sit for a week in a sealed container. Dry and grind.

Snuffgrinder, how about drinking the whiskey and honey and then blowing on the leaves?

Damn, Pieter, I thought you quit drinking or is it just the new profile photo?
