Acorn snuff box

Well I was bored a while back and had some huge acorns on hand from the ranch. I started thinking & decided to try and make a snuff box out of one. I cut the top of acorn off, scrapped out all the nut then lined it with plastic dip. I took a piece of cork and glued to the lid of acorn. Lid actually seals tight. This is my first attempt. This acorn is from last year. I have a few new ones from this year that are a lot bigger but they are not dry enough yet to cut & scrape.

What a great idea! I’ll have mine completed tomorrow…

They are also good to stick a toothpick in and make a spinning top!

Nice idea. I have been toying with the idea of making a small snuff bottle from spent military brass rifle cartridges. Has anyone tried this?

I also think the brass smell is disagreeable. Hadn’t really considered that. I could use steel cases or coat the inside of the brass with resin. Probably too much work. Oh, and all the burned powder etc would have to be wire brushed out down to the bare metal. Most of my ammo is el cheapo milsurp and definitely is corrosive. Cool mailbox though.

deficiency, I’ve seen that mailbox, I think someone sent me an email with it. It is sweet. stitch, If you really want to do a brass casing box, buy a small package of brand new reload brass (they are cheap)? But from my experience metals give snuff a different taste. You would definitely have to coat it with something, perhaps some plastic dip like I used on the acorn. It dries with no scent. You could try nickel casings? With a little emory cloth you could get a bullet to fit in the casing snug enough to hold tight but still be able to pull out to dispense snuff!

Roderick, only if they are all out of diapers & if you provide free snuff for life!! ;~) I can teach them how to live off the land… & teach them that being outdoors is more fun than the X-Box or other video games. They can attend the Troutstroker’s Hillbilly Country Boys School for City Slickers & Misguided Youth!

Blazer aluminum casings would do for a small snuffbox. Btw Spent cartridges have been favored for snuff containers in parts of Africa since metallic cartridges were first used.

Alright, so where’s everyones acorn box?

A bit too large for my pocket…oh well Seriously though, if I had an oak tree around I’d definately give it a go.

@ onefortheroad You can try to make one using a mango seed? You can find mango’s at the market & the seed is pretty big.

How do you get a mango seed open. I guess you would need tools for that. I’ve always tried to use my hands and fork and knife sometimes.

That is so cool! I was out backpacking and saw acorns and was thinking it would make a great snuff box…but I couldn’t find a good one that wasn’t chewed up by squirrels! I want to buy one…let me know…great snuffer minds think alike! Trout- where do you live…I saw lots of trout in the streams last weekend around the San Gabriel River…It would be fun to get together and fish and share snuff…sounds like we enjoy the same things. I live about 20 miles south of Los Angeles in Palos Verdes.

bryan, I live up in the tall pines of the sierra nevada mountain range in northern california a little south west of Lake Tahoe. So you live out on the peninsula? Used to be in that area pretty often. Back when my Dad was still a L.A. Sheriff, he lived in Ontario before retiring to Missouri. We would spend a lot of time going to the coast and going fishing. Used to go out on a charter fishing boat every summer and head out near Catalina is search of yellow fin tuna. The company we usually went out on was in Balboa though. Did a lot of gold panning up in the San Gabriel Mountains & there was some good trout in there, and did some 4x4 up around Mt. Baldy & Big Bear. Up where I’m at, there are rivers and lakes all around that are just full of big trout & gold. Hopefully it stays this way. With over 1000 wildfires burning across the state right now, luckily none are close by.
