Sorry for my recent absence guys. I’m actually on holiday in Iran at the moment, long story short my wife is Iranian and we have a lot of family out here. Lovely place, fantastic hospitality all round. Internet is quite the pain in some areas however, hence my absence. Sadly I chose not to take any snuff with me. The basis being that I didn’t need any additional worries coming through customs and baggage checks. I must say I miss it dearly, but I’ve made sure I have several small amounts stashed away in the car for when I return, which is 3 whole weeks minus snuff… I was wondering if anyone else has ever visited Iran, or even better, actually lives there currently?! I have been keeping my eye out for any snuff, especially maybe any of the indian snuffs which I figured may be around here but to no avail as of yet.

M

Maybe grind up or pulverize some local tobacco?

V

@Mouse that was my thought. I’m going to head to a local shop tomorrow and hopefully find something I can use. Hopefully I might find something other than cigarettes or rolling tobacco… Who knows, perhaps this’ll be my journey into snuff production! I have enjoyed a fair few shishas/hookahs, so I’m still getting a bit of my vitamin N

B

You may be able to get some Dokha tobacco. one or two hits are all you’ll need.

I

Some times I wonder if there is a tobacco you don’t know about @basement_shaman.

B

@Igglet well I am all in. Dokha and Thuoc lao are some of the strongest tobaccos I have had. If you want dokha it is currently on sale BOGO for DDD til 3-29 I also have some Japanese Kiseru/Koiki Tobacco that is thinner than hair and taste amazing. I have no idea where you can source some

C

I’ve read that rolling tobacco pestled with some simple rock salt makes for a decent survivalist snuff. Iran seems like a gorgeous country. I’ve seen several films from there, and I dig Googoosh a lot. She’s my favorite Middle Eastern recording artist.

J

@vitellius, I traveled in Iran a few years ago - Tehran, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz. I stuck with the pipe at the time, whenever anyone saw me smoking it they’d shout out “Captain Black!” which suggested at least some familiarity with the concept of the pipe, if not outstanding good taste. I brought my own supplies, though, so I didn’t look in the markets. Lovely country, great people. Shame about the miserable sods in charge, but I could say the same for many other places.

V

@basement_shaman I shall keep an eye out! I bow down to your vast knowledge of tobacco. @cpmcdill It is indeed! This is my third trip over here. It goes without saying it is a beautiful place. I spend most of my time is Isfahan where my wife’s family is from. It is renowned for is beauty even within Iran itself. @JakartaBoy I knew I’d find someone who had been! Absolutely agree with you, it’s a terrible shame. And as you said many many more places are the same. In fact I’m not convinced any government truly represents the common sentiments of it’s people. I almost packed a pipe, what a dunce…

V

Also, @basement_shaman which website is that offer on sorry?

J

It was hard to go anywhere without a group of dudes offering to share a shisha, usually with tea, pomegranate, and pistachio nuts on the side. I usually accepted to be sociable, but I never really dug the shisha. I don’t get much nicotine out of it and I don’t really like the sweet flavors. Isfahan is a gorgeous town. If that square was anywhere else in the world, it would be up there with the pyramids or the Sistine Chapel as a tourist attraction. As it is, it’s all for you and the locals.

B

Here you are Enjoy; https://www.medwakh.com/ He used to give a 10% off for mentioning snuffhouse.org

V

Damn you @basement_shaman I’ve spent all day trying to track down some koiki kizami tobacco… You have ignited my flames of interest and impulse, now I won’t sleep till I bloody find some! Thank you for the website, I’ve got my brother in law coming in another few days, I’ve skyped him and told him he has to find me some Dokha when he gets here! @JakartaBoy indeed, such a beautiful bazaar. In fact I’m pretty sure it is the biggest in the world though I’m not 100% sure on that! I know that from each side you look out on you can see nothing but the sky. Once over there was a building that was built too high, they had to demolish it and start again!

B

vitellius you best get some tranquilizers then. Or fly to Japan, it is quite expensive but exquisite

V

Well I do like a challenge so here goes nothing! Where do you get yours from?

M

Jealous. Guess I’ll get some whole leaf and slice it thin and make believe it’s the real thing. Is it a Virginia?

B

@vitellius sorry the site I got mine does not carry it. You might want to contact @SgtJon ; I believe he lives out that way. Maybe he can get some for you.

V

Many thanks @basement_shaman, I’ve sent him a message now =). I was planning a trip to Japan in the near future anyway, but anything I could get beforehand would be fantastic.

@vitellius, in Isfahan I stayed at the home of a lovely woman, an old aristocrat who spent six months of the year in Spain. She told me her daughter wanted to go back packing around SEAsia, and she asked me if I thought Indonesia was safe for a young woman. She said she was a bit worried because she’d heard it was full of RELIGIOUS FANATICS. I couldn’t help laughing out loud. It sounded a bit bizarre to hear Indonesia described that way in Iran.

So what did you tell her, @JakartaBoy? What did you say in answer to her question (about it being safe for young women and/or about religious fanatics)?

S

Just spent my entire lunch reading abut Dokha… Going to be ordering a sampler of that real soon. @basement_shaman you are like having a tobacco Yoda around… Do you use The Force to put snuff in your nose?

B

@SnuffnStuff =)) did how you know young jedi

S

@basement_shaman …I’m just going to refer to you as Master from now on… You should just answer everyones questions with sayings like… Snuff or snuff not, there is no try. or “Not snuffing is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

J

@fredh, I just said like anywhere, be careful, watch your bags, don’t pass out in public, or words to that effect. Women friends tell me this place isn’t too difficult to travel in. SEAsia in general is easy traveling. Of course, tourists get targeted for trouble all over, so I’m not saying bad things can’t happen. The daughter had survived a previous trip to Thailand, so I figured she’d be OK.

V

@JakartaBoy there aren’t half some interesting people around these parts! I remember first time I came around 4 years ago, I met some tour guide who was offering his services which I kindly declined. But he spoke fluent french, and his english wasn’t too bad. So I had a chat to him in French, turns out he was on some documentary they had played on a french tv channel. Not 100% believing him I looked it up and low and behold there he was! Crazy place. @SnuffnStuff that whole post is the greatest thing I’ve read all day. Absolutely hilarious, I’m going to get a t-shirt hat reads snuff or snuff not, there is no try. Damn, I wish I’d come up with that!

S

@vitellius Glad it made you laugh! Yeah there needs to be a Snuffhouse t-shirt with the Snuffhouse logo on the front and Snuff or snuff not, there is no try. on the back.

L

i have been in iran, Dubai, Germany Russia etc 10 years ago without knowing any other tobacco product other than cigarettes or pipes. i wish i knew dokha or snuff would like to try it. I looked medwach.com but the shipping costs 45$ to my country so i asked some iranians in my city but they don’t know dokha. I met an afghani today, he only knows dokha but he doesn’t prefer it. He also knows @sixphoto snuff he says his grandfather uses “black snuff” for 70 years and also says the best snuff is the black ones.

V

@linguist i just looked and it’s the same price to ship out to the uk. On a positive note, it seems my in laws have worked out what I was looking for and now know where to get the Dokha and the pipe to smoke it with from! They had a colloquial term for it, I should’ve known it wouldn’t be Dokha… I shall post my pictures when I hopefully find it!

J

@vitellius, maybe ask your in-laws if there is an Afghan quarter in the town. Lotta Afghan migrant laborers in the country. Some of them like their snuff, as @linguist suggests.

Found a site for japanese tobacco http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://2-world.com/index.php%3Fmain\\_page%3Dproduct\\_info%26products\\_id%3D71%26language%3Den&prev=search

V

@basement_shaman Thank you sir! I’ve had a good luck at it, I don’t imagine it’s anything dodgy, if I can’t source some elsewhere I’ll just give it a go with a small order to start. Thanks once again, I really appreciate it!!

S

@vitellius sorry the site I got mine does not carry it. You might want to contact @SgtJon ; I believe he lives out that way. Maybe he can get some for you.

Got the message and will try to help him out.

L

@vitellius i ordered from turbobkh w/ $25 shipping cost and w/ paypal.

V

@linguist thanks for the update, if I come up empty handed here I’ll probably pay the website a visit. Thanks!

V

A quick update; Turns out some of my wife’s family had Dokha lying about in the basement! This will take some explaining so here goes… Also, if there’s any Iranians on here I’d love there input! I soon came to realise that Dokha is not the term used in Iran (actually an Arabic term), as a matter of fact, the whole Dokha scene isn’t quite as iranian as I’d first imagined. Whilst it is marketed online as persian tobacco it isn’t readily available here. The tobacco itself is called tutun, which is a universal term for tobacco. The pipe in which it is smoked here is called a chopoogh, therefore Dokha as we know it is called tutun chopoogh. As I said initially I was lucky enough to have family here that had some readily available. I have been here for 3 weeks nearly and have found none in any shop… Now of course this isn’t labelled as Dokha, so I’m basing my confirmation on several points; the tobacco is rural persian, it is strong, it is definitely mixed with various herbs etc and it definitely looks like the Dokha being sold elsewhere. However I clearly have no knowledge as to whether this is hot, warm or cold. Here is a pic of the ‘tutun’; Image and video hosting by TinyPic Now the pipe, chopoogh, is unlike the Medwakh ive seen online. It’s actually got a huge bowl, unlike the tiny bowl featured on a Medwakh. However, charcoal is packed into the bowl to ultimately reduce the bowl size by almost 90%. The charcoal is then spiked to increase draw, and the tobacco is placed on the top of the charcoal to be smoked. I would guess the quantity of tobacco smoked in each version is around the same. The stem is rather long comparable to a church warden only longer. Here is a picture of the ‘chopoogh’; Image and video hosting by TinyPic Smoking it was a delight. As I said earlier the stuff was definitely mixed with other herbs, and that lead for a wonderfully unique blend that I couldn’t fully describe. No one scent really stands out, though they all complement the strong tobacco flavour it has. All in all it has been a fantastic experience, albeit an infuriating search that almost ended in failure! A few notes; This has been my experience in attempting to unmask this aspect of iranian culture. I may have been completely wrong, and if anyone could shed any better light on the subject I would be most appreciative. My ability to speak Farsi is excellent, I have a vast understanding of the spoken language, however my written and reading ability is completely null. Perhaps I could have made further progress without said hindrance. This form of tobacco consumption is in severe decline here to my understanding. The chopoogh is mainly enjoyed in more rural parts of Iran, and being in one of the main cities this also more than likely hindered my progress. Thanks guys!

B

Well I am glad you found some. Sorry for enlighten you to such an exotic product. As Ambrose said, when in Rome

V

@basement_shaman I thank you for enlightening me! It allowed me to dig around for something well worth the search!

M

I would love to go to Iran, not for the tobacco or lack of snuff…I’d bring my own, but for the food. I love Persian food. I had an Iranian girlfriend back in the time when the Shah was forced to leave and the Ayatollah Khomenie( the original Ayatollah that inspired so much hatred here in the US). She used to tell me that her dad smoked a “hubble-bubble”, a water pipe, and that it smelled good. That was nearly thirty-something years ago. Ahh, my misspent youth. I should have married that girl.
