A snuff for a beginner…

_

Hi, my name is John. I’m a smoker of 20 years and want to quit. I’ve never even tried nasal snuff, but my brother-in-law has been smoke free for two years now by using snuff. I’m going to give it a try. All information on, what the first timer should buy, and techniques would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think you would not go wrong heading over to the Toque web site, select the 10 for the price of 9 sampler and select a range that appeals to you, I would definitely include ‘Original’ and ‘Quit’ . The variety will keep you from becoming bored, the 10 gram tins are easy to carry.

I’d actually recommend getting one or two from each major manufacturer. Toque is one, yes, and the 10 for 9 deal is great. Plan on spending 50-60 dollars first order to acquire a good variety. (Second orders are actually easier to advise than first ones). Get some Wilsons of Sharrow, Samuel Gawith (avoid 10g tap boxes - go with the 25g vacuum tin), Gawith Hoggarth (again avoid 10g tap boxes), McChrystals, Toque, De Kralingse Molens, Bernard (tap boxes ok), Pöschl (tap boxes ok), Scandinavian (sometimes listed as Swedish Match or Arnold André 10g boxes ok), Dholakia and Six Photo. Stop there. Don’t go too crazy. Order whichever scents appeal to you. Don’t get American scotches yet, unless you can find them locally. If you can find them locally buy one or two or three, make sure one is not a sweet. Don’t buy connoisseur or high nicotine, ultra fine grind, or pain inducing snuffs yet (I’m looking at you, Bohica) unless novelty is what you are after. These can come later after you’ve settled in. Quitting smoking is an admirable goal, but get comfortable with snuff first. Don’t expect to just happen. It will require some willpower on your part. It can be done, but its best done in stages. You can be a dual user until you’ve found your niche. A few more weeks or months of smoking are not going to make a lot of difference in your long term health.

Oh, also, get your brother-in-law to show you something. He might be willng to share snuff or using techniques (also read our technques category - full of good advice, experiments, and folks finding their own way. Its really not complicated. You put snuff in your nose and try not to choke on it. ) There’s nothing like a teacher first hand. Most of us have not had that benefit and just fuddle our way through. After that, send him here. We welcome veterans as well as novices.

Mouse and Xander, thanks for the tips. I’ll be putting in an order soon.

This kit is also a good start I especially enjoy Smoker’s Blend: https://mistersnuff.com/catalog/qsnuff-quitkit-168g-p-141.html

I will agree The Smoker’s Blend is pretty good for starting out.

I’ll check it out. Thanks, guys!

If you’re looking for ONE snuff to start with, I’d recommend Toque Quit. It’s a high nicotine snuff, so it’s good to convince you that snuff can indeed satisfy a desire for nicotine. It’s not scented, so you won’t face the problem of dealing with a scent that you can’t stand. It can bite, but it’s still quite an easy snuff to use. If you like it, try some of the other Toque range. I was going to recommend Dholakia White, just to be controversial. Seriously, though, I don’t think beginners necessarily have to start with “easy” snuffs. If I’d first started with the mild, sweet smelling snuffs, I would probably have decided it’s not worth the bother.

Thank you all for the great info, tips, and wonderful support on my new journey. I apologize for not interacting very much, but I’ve been reading and reading and reading AND READING. LoL So much great information on here for a Newbie like me. I’m trying to learn all I can right now so maybe I can actually join in a conversation or even comment without sounding like an Idiot… Here’s what I have coming to me though; Toque Quit, WoS Crumbs of comfort, WoS SM 500, and Dholakia White. @Xander thanks for the invite! Seems like a friendly bunch of people. I’m still smoking until my snuffs get here.

M

You have made good choices; if some snuffs don’t ring your bell right away just put them aside for a while and you’ll probably find yourself trying them again later. You might also enjoy an e-cig for times when smoking or snuffing is not appropriate, takes the edge off. I use one occasionally in my non-smoking shop where I can’t smoke a pipe and also have one in my truck (the residual tobacco smell is nearly gone, so when I go to sell it later…).

i used swedish snus to stop smoking, and i use it more than snuff. trouble is i cant get it in the UK in shops thanks to the law, so have to import it. the other downside is due to this, if i run out or dont have any with me, ill snuff loads and end up buying a pack of marlboro or drum. never got on with the e-cigs. i really disagree with them as a whole. good four there as i understand, toque quit and sm500 (when its fresh) are two of my faves. never had the other two, though i intend to try crumbs of comfort and i have white elephant which i believe is similar to d. white.

@Firestarter0 When they DO come in… Which one do you think I should try first?

J

> Which one do you think I should try first? If it were me, I’d open all the tins within the first few minutes of their arriving and try each of them in quick succession. If you do get the Dholakia White, take some time to read advice on how to use fine, dry snuff. It’s exceptionally easy to snuff DW too hard, which tends to result in the powder hitting throat, maybe lungs. You have to try that one very, very gently. It’s also quite sharp, but it gets a lot of return customers. If you find it difficult, leave it to the side and try again in a few weeks after you’ve used the others. e-cigs? Hmm. I did try tobacco in a vaporizer, but I don’t like it. I’ve tried a cheap and nasty e-cig, and I didn’t like that either. Personally, I smoke an occasional pipe (max two per day, often less) and don’t feel any the worse for it.

i suggest you dont use the white first, but thats to make sure you dont have an empty dry nose when you do try it. Quit is fine ish too, but id say between toque quit and crumbs first. not sure though, since ive never had crumbs. really must get some… i find a fresh background note in the sm500 that i really enjoy, and it seems to open me up more than most other mint/menthol types.
