I’ve found that several of my snuffs tend to have small clumps that can only be dealt with by chopping. First, I used an envelope, but I’ve since discovered that my CVS Rewards Card works even better. As someone new to snuff, I think something to chop snuff with is the first (and possibly only) accessory one really needs. I’m just wondering if anyone thinks that there’s a snuff accessory as vital as a “chopper”. I guess a spoon is right up there, but other than those two… Is there any REAL need for anything else?

T

I just use the stainless steel large Mr Snuff snuff or spoon or my pocket knife

M

clumped snuffs get sieved here. Cook shops frequently sell a fine mesh screen.

B

A few hundred glass jars, a dozen or so assorted snuff boxes, A dark colored handkerchief.

I never found the need for a chopper since 1980. If the snuff falls out I will just pinch my nostrils and it stays in place. Course snuff is a slow release nicotine delivery system. It the clumps are too big to fit on the spoon then they get crushed by the spoon. I guess if you’re using a bullet or some other gadget I could see chopping and sieving would be handy.

C

I just use my pipe tamper to lightly press the clumps then give the tin/snuff box a shake.

B

I use a pocket knife. In fact I use it for everything snuff related as the idea of pinching it with my fingers kills me because of the waste. Some poor children grow up with no snuff at all!

J

I didn’t realize how many glass jars I needed lol I got a tap box, a spoon and a hanky.

C

I typically snuff by pinching. If I rub the fingers around the snuff as I’m sniffing, it breaks up any clumpiness.

I second @basement_shaman about jars. Dark amber jars ranging in size from 1oz to 8oz, especially if you buy a large variety in various quantities. Remember to label and date them. Dark jars kept out of the sun at reasonable temps will allow you to keep them fresh for years. If you leave them in the tap boxes or tins you will notice a decline in freshness within weeks or months.

(you want the amber glass straight-side jars w/phenolic caps)

@cpmcdill Thanks for the advice on the jars. I bought some at Walmart, but they’re clear. As I have them in a non-clear container though, I guess I’m alright. Still, moving forward I’ll get some of the jars you’ve recommended.

These are the ones I use : http://www.freundcontainer.com/2+5-oz-cobalt-blue-glass-wide-mouth-packer-bottles-black-phenolic-cap/p/4235B03/ I peel the labels off the tins by adding some heat to the underside and then trim the warning label section off and stick them to the jar. I think they look sharp. If I had a printer I would take a picture of the label and print my own. This small investment will keep your snuff fresh for years to come. Or just finish one tin at a time and don’t bother with storage solutions.

T

@basement_shaman If I was going to try the one tin at a time freshness method, I should’ve done it before spending $160 on my first order! As is, I think I’m set with my snuff for quite some time, especially as I’m snussing a lot lately.

S

I have some self mashed Cuban tobacco, one variety in the original wooden cigar box (it keeps maturing) and another variety in a porcelain jar which is located near the window on the north side of the house. No decline in moisture and freshness there.

If you know someone that has a baby, those baby food jars are great for free snuff storage jars. Just wash them and they are good to go.

I’m not sure how wide spread they are, but out by us I can get very dependable amber jars for about a buck apiece at Michaels (a craft superstore). As for a chopper, I have never used one. I just rub clumps out with my fingers as I go to pinch. All I seem to need is a tin and a hanky B-)
