This is a very interesting looking item and I am intrigued by its composition. I am though at the moment doubtful that it would be snuff proof. I see that the seller is contactable but only if you are a member of facebook, which I am not. I wonder if someone else might contact this manufacturer and query it’s potential as a reasonably airtight container for snuff?

A

All depends on the hinge or closure, the composition of the material is not that relevant, it’s the tolerances in the manufacture that count. Presumably this was cast in a mould - if the mould was very accurately made and the casting was perfect it might suit snuff although it would be too small for me. Striking looking object though.

Sent Jason a message about developing some flip tops. I will post when replied.

S

Sent him a message asking him about the tightness of the seal, this was his reply:

"I’ve never heard of anyone use it as a snuff box so i have no direct evidence, but i think it would work pretty well. I build my boxes to a pretty tight spec and while i wouldn’t rate them as waterproof, they’re pretty close. I would also do some testing on your box before i shipped it to make sure it passed a flour test.

Give it a try and if you don’t like it i’ll give you a full refund and pay for shipping it back.

thanks and let me know if you have any other questions"
Jason

That seems eminently reasonable.

Hello Gents-

Thanks for recognizing my boxes, not necessarily built for snuff but I think would do the trick.  I discussed a flour test with snuffinClown and decided to take a quick vid and post it to youtube.  Like I mention in the vid’s description, the box i use in the vid is not a finished box, it’s just an average scrap box, but illustrates that even the rejects have a tolerance that can hold the finest grains.  here’s the vid:

So, I think my boxes would be fine for snuff, but if members want to discuss a different kind of design incorporating their desired features, I think democracy can work for design.  Then again, there’s the old warning of too many cooks in the kitchen, so…

E

That’s quite impressive. Makes me glad I accepted your membership request!

I might just have to investigate the state of the funds…

S

Egads! @threx is one of us! Many thanks for testing this out, I like the idea of getting an indestructible snuff box and shall check with the committee of finance shortly.

Looks good!

A

That looks just about perfect. I think the slide top is very cool. Would you also be able to make a flip top hinged style? There are not too many of those available new anymore and were the traditional shape for a snuff box.

Either way, from that demonstration I would certainly be in the market for one.

K

Great, looks like a winner.

T

appreciate the good words lads, i took a bit of a chance with the scrap box and lack of choreography (or sound…) but figured you’d all be discerning enough to filter the bits of importance.

here’s a little incentive

pretty cryptic…

T

As for making a traditional flip top style, it sounds interesting.

  1. would you want it essentially identical to the traditional design or is there room for variation?

  2. Anyone have any features to suggest?  I think i saw a thread here mentioning an internal light.  Kind of far out, but it’s come across my mind more than once.

links to good traditional box examples, preferably ones that have dimensions displayed, are appreciated.

@
threx The problem with slide boxes is the powder stick to the lid and sneaks out the back @ 1.14 on video.not a big loss but over time sand paper like action cuts away at the seal. This is why flip tops are great access for a pinch. Function over form is paramount. Your magnetic closure is genius! rectangular squarish corners will be fine rather then traditional oval end shape if this keeps cost down.

Lights are far out and impractical since moist snuff would cover it and defeat it’s function.

Some modern boxes have an end that slides making tap out possible; but again not necessary

A simple- only one moving part a flip up lid around the cost of your pill boxes

For a medium -large size flip top=length between 2.5 and 3 inches, width 1.25 to 1.75 and internal depth 3/8 to 1/2 inch. The lid should be no more than  1/4 inch from front /back and ends.

A smaller box= the same size as a Zippo lighter would be Ideal.

The lid could even shiplap front back and sides for a tighter fit if magnetic. and wouldn’t have to open front to back it could open left to right or spin it around right to left. This option would make a shorter hinge area.

M

Definately a flip box, when you hold the box with one hand and pinch with the other it just makes it easier- unless you only use it at a table. Slim enough that it more or less disappears in the pocket. Large enough to hold about 4/5 grams or more. Just my two cents…

A

I would like a traditional flip top with no lights or bells - at the end of the day snuff is a very traditional thing. Maybe you could make a couple of styles?

The photo shows the inner workings of one of my silver boxes. You couldn’t copy this exactly with a cast medium, but hopefully you get the sense of the thing.

The thread on this location:

shows one of the extruded plastic snuff boxes that Mr Snuff sells, the shape and size are excellent.

K

@threx I agree that the flip top design works best. I have a couple of boxes that are no longer serviceable, which I would be happy to send you for reference.

K

@threx just tried to order a box but the checkout needs me to become a member of facebook. I really don’t want to do this, so could you message me how to pay you directly by paypal?

A

And me, I don’t want to join facebook either.

B

you can join and not use it. You can join and send each other funny pictures of cats and nothing else.

M

speaking of cats, I’m curious about your icon there, I can’t get my eyes to focus in well enough. Is that a house kitty or a small wildcat? Cute anyways!

B

it’s a kitten of a wild cat. I forget which type. But it’s slightily bigger then a house cat and it’s a little baby cat.

B

click on my name for a bigger picture. It’s even cuter when you can really see it.

N

it looks like an Ocelot kitten to me

J

@n9inchnails - I’d say ocelot for certain. Delightful little fellow!

B

M

So cute!

M

I would have thought it was a ‘bob’ cat

W

Just ordered a box with the red cross on it I look forward to receiving it.

Stefan

B

I would have thought it was a ‘bob’ cat

no I’am a bob cat.

M

a groovy cat

T

thanks for all the feedback and the thoughts about the pros and cons of flip vs slide top boxes. i think i’m going to have a go at a traditional type snuffbox - thank you to @basement_shaman for the dimensions.

To @khalid, @snuffster and anyone else annoyed by the facebook thing - you need to have an etsy account (free) and be signed in to complete checkout. If you are not signed in, you are shown an account registration form and there’s a facebook button at the top of it.  The button is just an option to speed up the membership registration process, just ignore it and fill out the form below it with your name and other info to register for an etsy account and complete checkout.

You definitely do not have to be a member of facebook to order (i am not), just etsy. You can also just use a credit card so those bothered by paypal are not forced into it.  Please give it another try and let me know if you continue to experience problems.

thanks

P

Its offical, i need spectucals; I have been under the impression, for quite some time, that @bob avatar was a colourfull little tree frog.

I may just have to order one of these boxes, its different enough for me.
