You’ve looked in now and again but never joined, you smoke - or use another form of tobacco - but it’s that time of year and you are thinking about quitting. Well… Get hold of a couple of cans of snuff in the milder range - Toque, Wilsons, Poschl are all good beginner snuffs, have a browse through the online stores on the left of this; there are plenty that will do to start. Avoid the ones known as toasts or scotch to begin with. Check out the various ‘how to’ threads and start substituting a couple of pinches of snuff for your usual smoke, dip or chew. Go slow and build it up. You won’t get massive buzzes but you will get a maintenance dose of nicotine and great flavour, also a pleasant, mild ‘lift’. Enjoy the moment and make it a ritual. Build it up slowly - or even make a straight switch - the desire for your other tobacco (with a wee bit of will power) will slowly turn into a desire for snuff. The following point is entirely personal but worked for me - don’t say you will never have another smoke or whatever again - in fact the second things get too bad have one, and loose the guilt; it’s your body. But keep on with the snuff and carry on as above. I’m now going months without a smoke through this approach. Even cutting down by half this time next year is better than yet another failed attempt to quit. Our current state of knowledge suggests snuff is massively less harmful than smoking; I would liken it to being a coffee or light alcohol user. just to reinforce snuffsters point about not telling yourselves never for the other tobaccos. I didn’t try to quit smoking with snuff and snus I just lost intrest in cigarettes eventualy.
Good advice. I quit last January with a similar technique. I bought a selection of snuffs from Snuff Store. Became captivated by McChrystals O&G and their other flavours and lost interest in fags. I smoked my last cigarette in February after 12 years of smoking and every day since I have felt much healthier. I started to struggle a bit in the Summer when I was going through a bad patch in my life. Rather than cave in to cigarettes, I tried snus and this worked a treat. The snuff I enjoy when I want the instant hit a cigarette provides, the snus keeps my mind perky and distracted from the desire to smoke again. I can’t see a reason to return to the roll ups, I really can’t.
This is superb advice and allow me to add my .02 cents. As someone who is just recently trying to stop smoking cigarettes, the road is winding and you will be led back to cigs again from time to time. Don’t feel guilty, I know as soon as things get stressful, I have an argument with my wife, etc. I want a cigarette and you know what? I just smoke the dang thing and after I calm down I get back on the routine with snuff. 3 months ago I was smoking 1 - 1 1/2 packs a day now I smoke less than a pack a week. Just keep the faith when the cravings get bad and you will perservere. BrSpiritus
I smoke pipes and cigars, use snuff and chew nicotine gum to fill in. I don’t worry about it. Just had a chest CT. passed with flying colours. I LIKE nicotine. In the 1890s almost 90% of men smoked cigars and the incidence of cancer was low. I’m not convinced that tobacco has caused the increase. If you have any medical problem, the Doctor asks “Do you smoke>” If you say yes he puts that down as a contributing cause. If you did that with any activity the statistics would “prove” that activity is bad for your health.
@ Nachman - Actually that’s circular reasoning. Most men don’t inhale when smoking cigars, one who did was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and he died of lung cancer IIRC. But he’s just one case. I see no problem smoking PURE tobacco. It’s the ready made cigarettes with their chemical soup of ingredients that make for so much cancer causing. If you’re going to smoke cigarettes when at least roll your own, RYO cigarette tobacco seems to be devoid of all the chemicals and flavourings of the big brand cigs.
i agree with all these comments and whilst i used to smoke tailor made cigarettes, i also liked roll ups too but i then went onto roll ups only last may after i had a bout of flu with a bad chest. when i discovered snuff last june i cut right down on the roll ups, not smoking during the week to only smoking at the weekend when i have a few beers, so now i only smoke around five rollups at the weekend. the tobacco i smoke now is the stuff you buy from the net i.e flavoured tobacco although i was never a heavy smoker, probably only ten a day, i always smoked more whenever i drank and even now, the urge to smoke is strong so i always have snuff with me. the way i see it, is if im only smoking a few rollups at the weekend, it surely cant be any worse than a couple of cigars at the weekend. cheers.
I would love to think RYO cigs are less harmfull, as that was the main stay of my own smoking. They are not. I’ve lost five close people to cancer in the last 20 years, the last two were RYO smokers who also thought that pure tobacco was safer. Its sadly nothing to do with what Marlboro do, its all to do with tar and the condensates that come with it. Smoking is lethal, period. Its very difficult to let go, as I know as much as anyone, so I don’t say that with any disrespect.
