I’m rather partial to a pinch of menthol and just wondered when they originated? I know there were mint snuffs back in the day, but does anyone know what the first menthol was?
They most likely existed way before, but I think hedges is one of the oldest still around, unless he the creator copied someone, e may have reinvented the wheel. Mentholated snuffs were used primarily as medicine a long time ago though, so really hard to tell.
I know nothing of history - but I do know that Red Bull is the highlight of my morning. I have yet to try Hedges, but it is on my next order for sure.
@jaap??
@Malatesta: We produce Mentholin, a tobacco free snuff powder of which the recipe dates back before 1860. Jaap Bes.
Menthol was first extracted in 1771 so no menthols before that.
A post in this thread suggests that Hedges L260 came along in the 1880’s.
Thanks, @snuffmiller. I had a feeling it was pretty old.

Didn’t care much for Red Bull. But, I buy Hedges by the 12 pack. If you like menthol, I think you’ll like it a lot.
I keep meaning to buy some. My local tobacconists is fantastic (and a tiresome five minute walk from my front door) but didn’t have hedges last time I went so got j h Wilson medicated #99 and it is fantastic.
