The A/P Snuff produced by De Kralingse in the Netherlands is one of my favourites. It is based on Latakia tobacco, which is smoke-cured. Therefore it has a basic smoky scent. The special thing about the A/P is the additional scent of pine, which is just lovely. The snuffs produced by De Kralingse have a coarse grain and are medium moist. Just the way I like it.

A

I like the Latakia Ao 1820 myself! Which the A/P is based on. Here is the Latakia Ao 1860.

W

No definately Latakia.

T

Jaap Bes would know, he made it. All the descriptions say its a snuff with latakia characteristics. Even the top review by Alex says its based on Latakia tobacco, not latakia based.

W

Fair enough I always thought it was latakia based. Ah well its still good stuff.

S

Hello everyone, Indeed the Latakia Ao 1860 is not pure Latakia tobacco. It resembles the smokey flavor of Latakia tobacco and is made of a fermented mixture of Virginia and Kentucky tobacco’s. Recently I introduced some new cacao flavours based on the Latakia Ao 1860: Choco L; Latakia Ao 1860 flavoured with cacao flavour. Chococreme L; Latakia Ao 1860 flavoured with cacao and whipped cream flavour. And Chocomint L; Latakia Ao 1860 flavoured with cacao flavour and Japanese peppermint oil. At the moment busy with some historical snuffs namely Bon Bon, Holländer Bolangero, Holländischer Musino, Holländischer Tabak aus Virginischer Blätter, Limburgertabak and Mississippitabak. Furthermore a tobaccofree snuff based on dried flowers and spices. And as I mentioned before the St Omer Karottensnuff. I’ll keep you posted on the progress. Jaap Bes.

B

I am really looking forward to those Jaap, keep up the great work!

A

Jaap, a Limburg and a Karotte? Great news! First, see imprint. Second, because I always wondered how such a one will taste.

T

So has anyone tried the de kralingse chocomint or chococreme as mentioned in comment 10. Anything you would like to share about it.

B

I have tried grinding up some pure Lakatia into snuff. It wasn’t good in my opinion. It actually tasted very bad to me- not like a nice smoky campfire like the kralingse stuff. Maybe it was the brand I tried, but it was just some pure Lakatia from the local tobacconist.

J

My understanding is that “Latakia” is tobacco that has been smoked over certain woods and herbs. So only after it’s been smoked it’s Latakia. Before that the tobacco is Oriental, Virginia and Kentucky etc. Hope this clears things up for some of you. Information on this subject is in the area of pipe tobaccos.

B

latakia is actualy a very small type of tobacco plant. AT least that is what I’ve heard.

T

celticsnuffer, Snuffstore has them & I think I’m gonna have to try some.

S

Juxtaposer is right, latakia is a process of smoking oriental leaf (Turkish, Syrian, Cyprian, etc.) over fires. There are many varieties of latakia depending on the leaf and the smoking, etc. Not all will be suitable for any one purpose.

A

I thought Latakia was a specific strain of tobacco, rather than a flavour obtained by blending or smoking? I used to smoke a Latkia pipe tobacco that just stated it was made from Latakia, ie a specific type of the plant. So if I smoked some of my Virginia hand rolling tobacco would that make it a Latakia?

S

Hello Snuffster, Latakia is the name of a harbour in West Syria and the name of a tobacco type produced in the east Meditterenean region much of the Latakia tobacco comes from Cyprus. After harvest and drying it is very heavily smoked, possibly with a special type of wood and I presume in special rooms because of the very intense smoky flavour. Jaap Bes.

S

Snuffster by the time you get your handrolling or any smokable tobacco, it’s too late to make it latakia. Latakia is made while the whole leaves are cured as part of the processing.

T

But you can scent the tobacco with a good Lapsang Souchong tea to get that rich smokiness.

A

Thanks for that Jaap and Snuffbox TS - how would you go about doing that?

T

snuffster, If you have lapsang already in the individual tea bags you can just put the tobacco you want to scent in a container that will seal good. Then put a few of the tea bags in and let sit for a few days or until the scent you want is achieved. If you have Lapsang in bulk like I do you can just put some in a paper coffee filter & tie it up & put in container with snuff or put snuff in bottom of container, lay filter over snuff then add lapsang over filter & let sit. But either way you do it, you want to agitate/stir the tobacco at least once a day to make sure all the tobacco has a chance to absorb. And if needed you can add fresh tea once a day. Tobacco is like a sponge and will absorb scents pretty good.

S

I just ordered some of this and am looking forward to it. WoS Grand Cairo gave me a hint of juniper/pine and this description sounds like something I might really enjoy.

S

@ Troutstroker, sorry you asked what Jaap’s chocomint was like. I never notice until this thread was bumpt up. It is very nice and very much, in taste to a Mint Aero chocolate bar, remember the choc bar with bubbles inside, I don’t think they are available in the US any more. But not a snuff I could stick with all day. I’ll try and find a picture to jog your memory.

T

Thanks Snuff Head, can’t say I’ve ever had that chocolate bar. I see on wiki that it was only available in US for a short time in 80’s & available at specialty stores that imports products. If I ever had one it must not have been impressive enough to stick in the brain.

S

Hello Brian, It is plain Virginia tobacco naturally fermented with the addition of potash and salmiak. If you sent me a postal address I’ll sent you a sample. Kindest regards, Jaap Bes.

S

Unfortunately, my supplier was out of A/P and they sent the Ao 1860 as a substitute. Its very impressive so now I really want to try the A/P even more.

O

Wow! I’ve just tried this one and its not for the faint-hearted. I can understand why people say it has a salty taste to it and definitely a smokey aroma but i didnt really get the pine smell. Its powerful though and have a feeling its going to linger in my nose for a long time! I’m sure this one will grow on me

O

Ahh, Salmiak is salty liquorice! that explains the salt… (where would we be without wikipaedia?)

W

I loved the Pine scent with this one. For some reason it made me nose run like a crazy but I can deal with that. I wish it were a finer grind though. Too coarse for my liking.

S

Bryan wrote, “I have tried grinding up some pure Lakatia into snuff. It wasn’t good in my opinion. It actually tasted very bad to me- not like a nice smoky campfire like the kralingse stuff. Maybe it was the brand I tried, but it was just some pure Lakatia from the local tobacconist.” Tobaccos like Latakia, perique, orientals are what they call condiment tobaccos. They are added in small measures to a base tobacco or blend (i.e. tobaccos like Virginia, Maryland, or Burley). An attempt at a straight condimental leaf would be pretty harsh and one dimensional. Go back and get a house Virgina blend 2oz add a teaspoon of Latakia to it, mix it, grind it, and then try it.

P

@Snifs, you are quite right. I made some snuff using latakia pipe tobacco and it was horrible. I blended it with some neutral snuff until it was to my taste.

P

I got some A/P a couple weeks ago. I tried it, and liked it, but found that the smoke nearly completely covered the pine scent. But then last weekend, I tried some after snuffing Rooster and Square all afternoon. With my nasal ‘smoke detectors’ overwhelmed from the scotches, all I could smell was the pine. It was really nice. This worked well with Whiskey and Honey, also. Nothing but Honey left if your nose was previously ‘smoked out’.

B

I should be getting some of this a/p next week and all I can say is I can’t wait to try this one. Also loved to open this previous discusion back up to hear more about it before I get my hands on it.

X

@ bob: don’t let it dry out and you will love it.

S

I love this snuff immensely. the pine scent is great and you can really pack the old beak with it. the drip at the back of the throat can be brutal though.

B

I’ve noticed that jaaps snuffs don’t tend to last long enough to dry out. They tend to have a chain snuffing quality to them from my experiences.

L

This is in the NicotineRush order that I am placing right now. I will let you know what I think in 2 days. I can’t wait.

B

awesome.

O

Just received this in an order from nicotinerush tonight. I had previously been so taken with the craftsmanship obvious in the Chococreme that I decided to make point and explore as much of the current line as possible. The A/P does not disappoint! Any sensory review I could possibly come up with would be a repeat of what has been said before. I will say that the balance of aromas in this at once simple yet layered snuff re-enforces my first impression of quality in manufacture. But of course I do have a question. What is the correct name of this brand of snuff? Dutch Windmills on nicotinerush de Kralingse on Snuffreviews Molens on MrSnuff and a few others it seems. Molens de Kralingse at snuffstore Dutch Windmill/de Kralingse at Mars The label on the containers indicates that it would be deKralingse.

L

I believe that is part of the mystery of Jaap’s snuffs…

X

Stichting De Kralingse Snuif en Specerijen compagnie: De Ster en De Lelie Is the proper name. Without the aid of babelfish and knowing almost no Dutch: _________ the _________ Snuff and Spice Company: the Star and the Lilly. Molens means mills. I don’t know what Stichting or Kralingse translate to. Star and Lilly are the two mills, each has a name. Look at the company logo: you will see a Fluer-de-lis (lilly) superimposed over a star. Jaap, no doubt, will be along to correct any errors in my reasoning.

O

Per the powers of Google translation: The Foundation Kralingse Snuff Company and Spices: The Star and The Lily Xander, I had no idea that the abbreviation on the lable, “Stg” was for Stichting, thanks for that. Funny, I’ve read what I could about the mills, familiar with the names of the two but as often as I’ve pondered the logo I never made the connection. My father used the old saw of, “Call me what you will, just please don’t call me late to dinner”. I s’pose as long as everyone knows what’s being spoken of all’s well. Molens, or de Kralingse or Dutch Windmills… certainly produce good snuff

S

Hello all of you, The mystery is that some of our customers like to put their own names to our products. One not listed by OTD is “Zwei Mühlen” which is used in Germany by SnuffStore.de. If there is in the name a connection with the windmills in which we produce, or with the former village of Kralingen, now Rotterdam, where the mills are located , that is O.K. with us. Our own labels show a star covered by a French lilly, which are the symbols for the names of the mills. Stg. short for Stichting indeed means Foundation as Xander said. This means we are not a commercial company. The main objective is to preserve the historical snuffmanufacturing and spices milling for future generations. This is all done by volunteers. As a byproduct of our activities we produce snuff and ground spices, which we sell to cover our costs. This is all done by: Stg. de Kralingse Snuif en Specerijen Compagnie De Ster en De Lelie. Jaap Bes.

O

Thank you Jaap. I had sent an e-mail asking the same, but as you have answered it here… So we can call it what we will, just continue to support the Stichting? That will be a pleasure to do sir!

K

I just received a container of the A/P this afternoon. I quite like it, but I do have one question. How dry is this snuff supposed to be? I looked up the reviews of this at snuffreviews.com and there does not seem to be any consensus on the moisture rating. Some say it is “very moist,” while others describe it as “dry.” My container is bone dry – as dry as an American scotch. I’m guessing that the dryness is making this snuff a bit more harsh than it would otherwise be. Or so it seems to me.

O

I’ve the same observations kjoerup, the variance in the existing reviews and what I received is very dry as well. I will be attempting to add a bit of moisture to some, later today. If it improves an already great snuff well…

X

Mine started very moist and turned very dry becasue I did not keep it airtight.

O

Aye that Xander I received 8 different snuff from de Kralingse 2 days ago. As yet to try them all, savoring rather than rushing through. I will be transferring all into smashboxes to avoid that issue!

S

Hello Kjoerup and OTD, The A/P as one of the Latakia types should be a little moist. Probably the enviroment in which it was stored was dry. A possible method to rehydrate is to spread the snuff out on a dish or something like it. Put it in a closed container above a layer of water. Let it stand some time and the snuff will adsorb the water vapor and become moist. If you don’t want to wait so long you can add a drop or two water direct to the snuff stir well after each addition and let stand for a couple of hours. Jaap Bes.

S

I don’t know if this works for snuff, but when my pipe tobacco dries out I put it in a ziplock baggie with an apple slice and leave it in the fridge for a few days.

O

@snuffmiller I added some moisture to the Macouba I received by placing some in a small smash box, smash box was then placed, open, into a small plastic food container with a small bit of water in the bottom and then had the lid snapped on. About 8 hours and it was perfection! Thanks Jaap!

T

@OTD I also had Great results from the same method! Sometimes it doesnt even take 8 hours, I had some snuffs become moist after only 4 hours with the same method. and sometimes I like to use whiskey instead of water.

S

Does the whiskey add any flavor to it? I knew some guys that used to put bourbon in their Copenhagen cans and let them sit for a day or two. That was before they made bourbon flavored Cope tho.

S

I love the A/P; that and the Latakia are the only snuffs from Jaap that I’ve found I enjoy (out of six or seven so far). I do think that the pine scent is definitely pronounced in this one–only thing, it tends to clog up my nose after a bit.

D

I just received my AP today and it is a fine snuff. I must say I am in love with the entire line of de Kraling snuffs! I love the Chococreme, the Choco, the AP, the Pepermunt, the Prina Regent, Macuba, and I am hoping I also love the Latakia that I also got today. I like a lot of snuffs but I could easily live with just this one line. Great job on them, good stuff The AP has that wonderful pine scent, like walking through a pine forest on a spring day!

D

And I forgot to add that I have a sample of BonBon which is also a great snuff! I will be buying a box of that as soon as I see it for sale!

L

I love the scent of the A/P, but for some reason is clogs me up like no other snuff I’ve tried. Still, it’s worth it.

B

love it too. Very woody smell. Does the opposite of clog me up.

P

This is one of the snuffs that is on my list to try. The dutch snuffs interest me quite abit, I am from a very dutch area in michigan, we even have our own authentic windmill from the netherlands a few miles from me. Which of the molens snuffs is the best in your opinion?

O

Hmmmm Toss up between … erm… nope, I don’t think there is a best from de Kralingse. They are all so darn good!

N

If they have the new Bon Bon it is very good. It is quite course and has a mild sweet choclatey scent. The nicotine comes on slow, but stays for a long time. The 1860 is good too if you like latakia tobacco. More of a nose burn than the Bon Bon. Smokey latakia scent. I smoke English blends in my pipe, so it is a natural for me.

B

@Pilgrim1 Haha, Holland, Michigan, eh! Very nice area…I picked up a pair of wooden shoes when I was passing through many years ago, as strange as that sounds, and yes they are actually comfortable. I haven’t had a bad snuff from de Kralingse yet

X

Prins Regent is my favorite, but all the ones I have tried are very good.

M

I also am a smoker of English type pipe tobaccos, and the lat. based snuffs do really flip a switch in the register or psyche. I belong to a pipe club, and most of the members are definitely latakia addicts, just walk into the room wherever we’re meeting! But to the point, you should have seen the reactions by the folks to whom I offered a pinch, most were impressed, and very suprised such a snuff existed! In my opinion they are very nice, the orange scented and the pine scented were especially nice surprises to my ol’ sniffer. Also the non latakia based ones that I’ve tried so far are also good, I hope you keep expanding your repotoir!

B

I still need to try the orange. I think my favorites currently of their line are the peppermunt which I honestly consider to be pure candy. I love the pompadour which is just amazing. It’s clove plus citrus which is really amazing because although you don’t really pick up on the citrus it really enhances the clove. I can’t wait to try the orange.

S

I love both the AP and AO. The AO is my go to snuff after a pipe smoke (I smoke heavey English blends) and there are those times when only AP will hit the spot. Well worth a try IMO

W

I just got 5g smash boxes worth of this (and the 1860), from MarsCigars (I needed to buy more of the ever elusive Czech tools and get some pipe nails something apparently unheard of and unobtainable locally and needed to make the order worth it). I havve been avoiding these just because I’ve only seen them in 25g quantities over at MrSnuff and wanted to try a smaller amount before buying… and I already think I will more than likely be a repeat (the larger at MrSnuff) buyer… I haven’t tried the 1860 yet, but I’ve only just for the first time tried the A/P. This is also my first time ever with any snuff from this maker (with all its names) it came packed very tightly in a very full to the brim 5g smashbox (MarsCigars says they ‘sell from bulk’ and were very generous in packing this 5g smashbox, I bet if I relocated it I’d find its actually a bunch more than 5g), its super super moist, so much so that the first thing I notice is its even harder to snuff than Taxi (which incidentally I did finally master taking Taxi but also the second tin of Taxi I got wasn’t nearly as moist as the first). In its super moistness this that I have is like the first super moist Taxi I had, or like NTSU, Babaton, my bottle of Railroad Mills Maccoboy, etc in that way. I thought I had it satisfactorily sniffed but it fell back out, its taken a few tries. Right away it makes my nose literally feel quite warm (which is pretty unusual, I can’t say I’ve actually had a snuff do that before), its a very nice feeling but at the same time I wonder if its a sign of risk of future clogging up if I keep taking this snuff for a long time, sniff after sniff. Not sure I will be sniffing this snuff that way anyway as another unusual thing about it is I really feel its nicotine. (I’m fairly immune and not getting it where you’d expect from the so-called stronger ones but a few surprise me… this one is now the second one, along with FUBAR Coconut are the two exceptions where I can ‘get it’ and noticeably so). I got a little dizzy and my heart started thumping, so I’m going to be reviewing and admiring and getting to know this snuff at a slower (perhaps saner then too lol) rate than I usually would. It has smokey scotch or toast smell in there I like a lot (these, toasts and scotches are my favorite types of snuff) I have to be honest if I hadn’t already read that its pine I am smelling I might not have recognized that’s what the other is. Since I have read it before, I can smell that’s whats in there, but if I hadn’t known I would have sworn it was actually the smell of fresh Christmas trees, some growing and some cut down at a Christmas tree farm. in fact that’s what this reminds me of, its a Christmas memory, especially with the other wood smell, its exactly like going out to the tree farm with your dad, picking out a tree, cutting it down, petting the pet deer (you know the one, they always have at least one pet deer with a red ribbon tied like a bow tie around its neck with a bell on it), then going inside to pay the man for your tree and in there he’s got the wood stove going to keep him warm.

J

I suspect that the base for De Kralingse latakia snuffs is actually mostly dark-fired Kentucky. There might be some latakia in it, as well. I have no evidence to back up this claim, just my nose. Fine snuffs, all the same.

N

The base for De Kralingse Latakia is Cyprian Latakia.

J

Nachman: “The base for De Kralingse Latakia is Cyprian Latakia.” May I ask what is source? I still maintain it’s Kentucky and virginia, plus some latakia perhaps. In fact, sampling more of this, I’m thinking there might be no latakia at all in this… I’ve ground some latakia (both Syrian and Cyprian) snuff myself, and they are totally different animals. Quite foul animals, I might add.

B

“The base for De Kralingse Latakia is Cyprian Latakia”. According to the chap who makes it, it’s actually Kentucky and Virginia tobaccos.

S

I’d imagine the source is Jaap Bes, the miller of De Kralingse snuff, since he posts on this board

P

it must just be me, have tried several molens snuffs, and dont get on with any of them - i actually dont like the smoky edge - each to their own I suppose (oh - and the boxes are useless!)

X

The Virgina based ones don’t have the smoke. All excellent ones! (Although I like the Latakia ones too, but less frequently)

N

@Jari T: I was just basing it on the taste when you drop a little into a pipe you are smoking. I guess my taster is not as good as I thought. Try a pinch in a lit pipe if you like latakia blends. Gives it a nice kick of flavour.

B

I just went searching for Jaap’s confirmation that there’s no Latakia in his Latakia snuff -and found it on page one of this thread :o)

P

@BradMajors, good for you, my young laddie!!!

W

@pauljmuk (and others) can we talk about the boxes a bit? having only gotten a smashbox of this (but already loving it and seriously considering getting bigger quantities, at least in the 25g form that MrSnuff has) what about the boxes? what are people’s experiences with them/this? I really prefer whenever possible to leave snuff in its original packaging (on a hope that the snuffmakers know better than I what their snuff will keep in, and mainly, because I just don’t have the containage to relocate much of anything bigger than 2 oz) Also @micheltn (and others) how about it if it does dry out? I really love it as it, but lets say the boxes do stink and/or its going to inevitably dry out like moist snuffs are inclined to do… it is still okay? Anybody had this in a really dried out form and found it to be still good? I normally only have dry snuffs on my ‘to bulk up’ list but this one could seriously be a contender and make me violate that rule… especially if its still sniff-able as a dry (also micheltn – I haven’t intentionally left it open because I’m really liking it as is plus it may have dried a tiny bit on its own already – sampler-style pillbox smash-boxes are a bit notorious for not truly snapping shut for me when I think they have and then I look and find the darn things sitting on my desk wide open I have some sort of extra hard time prying them open then getting them to agree to actually close). with all this in mind, I’m hoping (very optimistically I’ll admit) that a dry A/P experience is somehow just as good but just ‘different’ than a super moist experience. I’ve never really considered trying to bulk up on a moist (other than buying maybe 3 or so NTSU or Taxies at a time and just hoping heh), anybody ever done this? Anybody know where I even could buy this in real bulk (250, 450 etc)?

J

Nachman: “Try a pinch in a lit pipe if you like latakia blends. Gives it a nice kick of flavour.” Hey, that’s a cool idea. I sprinkled some Widmill Lat. in a bowl of Hal O’ The Wynd –– it produced a few minutes of flavor (and nic.) boost. Cheers! @BradMajors: Ah, the proof was so close. Perhaps I’ve read it before and then “forgot” about it.

C

The De Kralingse boxes are like tapboxes on steroids. I like them even though I usually detest tappers. I think they are neat. And now all of Jaap’s snuffs are available in 100g tubs. So even if you have to buy one here and there, there is no reason not to get these amazing Dutch gems.

W

@cstokes4, where can I buy the 100g tubs? (I live in the US and the two stores I’d look to first, MrSnuff and NicotineRush don’t seem to have it that way).

C

You can order them from Jaap directly. Simply email him at info@snuifmolens.nl and let him know what you would like and where you live. He will contact you with the total and how to pay. Here is the menu of snuffs and prices directly from Jaap: www.snuifmolens.nl

O

Jaap is not only a magician when it comes to making a fine snuff, he also has it together when it comes to shipping the goods. I placed an order with him about 2 weeks ago, it went from The Netherlands to Oregon in 4 days!! Amazing

W

thanks! going to have a look and email right after

X

I’ve been working up a bulk order from Jaap in my head. I’m trying to keep it under a certain price, but none of the snuffs I have chosen have volunteered to leave the list. When I take these snuffs, I just pop the top off the dispenser and squeeze my fingers in for a pinch. Its easier than tapping. If I’m putting them away for awhile, I seal the seam with electrical tape.

W

i wasn’t able to see a menu or prices, just two pictures of canisters without even names (I use firefox, maybe its a bug?), but (after a major completely non-snuff-related distraction) I have finally emailed.

C

http://www.snuifmolens.nl/pagina%20shop.htm

X

press the “snuff” button

W

airight… guess I could have sworn I hit that button before I hit ‘store’… but I see it now… at the top it says “All snuffs are available 100 gram polypropylene screw cap containers € 9,00” (any guesses what that translates as US dollars?)

N

a little over $12.00 if that is English Pound . My eyes arn’t so good so I’m not sure what your symbol is.

E

That € is the symbol for Euros… £ is pounds sterling. God knows what $ is

N

its about 1.35 dollars to a Euro. about 1.5 dollars to a pound.

C

What the hell is a euro or a pound?

O

@whistllr Here’s a handy currency calculator. Save it to your bookmarks, we may be doing much more overseas purchases in the future! Just now 9 euro is around 12.14 USD

W

OTD, thanks, bookmarked Tho’ I’m not real sure that I’ll be able to buy overseas… I think I maybe need to go back to one of those PACT threads and ask if the PACT at least might override a certain state’s law (I know that if a federal law deals with the same thing as a state law the federal law takes right of way and the state one has to quit… but I don’t know if the particular state law I’m talking about is exactly the same or on the same topic enough to have that happen… don’t answer that here… I’ll go post it where it belongs)

X

you’re a funny guy Chris.

B

@ Micheltn Stokes is more to be pitied than scolded. This is the same reason I recently upgraded my computer to a “floppy-system”,to gain access to these obscure trivia questions (In his defense, Encyclopedia Britannica does not cover ALL the money symbols . I always just called them “Ells”, you know the fancy one some folks call pounds.)

X

What’s Google?

M

I keep all Molen’s snuff in the freezer, it preserves the moisture. I take it out, let it sit for 5 minutes, then snuff. It works well for me.
