Ok, So just got my first shipment of snuff (YAY!) And went through my first run of partaking of this lovely pleasure. I went through some coughing and sneezing and finally got the snuff the stay. However 15 minutes later both sides were runny. I ended up blowing my nose and feeling a little like a failure. BUT I LOVE the scent/flavor and how my nose feels even now as I write and await an answer on my questions. Was blowing the nose a bad move on my part (I understand at the beginning a runny nose is natural). And of the 6 flavor/scents or toque I just got (Original, Almond, Natural Toast, Menthol, Whisky&Honey, and Ginger (all bullets)) which would you recommend this newbie to try next?
P.S. I am finding it easier to take snuff by tapping a dose out of the bullet on the back of the hand, somehow its finding the right spots better than taking it from the bullet, but perhaps my bullet use technique needs improvement.
I blow my nose when my body tells me I need to, just listen to your body. There’s no failing at snuff. As for suggestions, I would get some Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original and Viking Dark to try some coarse moist natural tobacco snuff. But really just go to Mr. Snuff and pick things that sound interesting, you’ll explore and find what works for you like we all did. Edit for a second thought. I stay away from bullets altogether, get a snuff box and pinch or boxcar or back of hand.
Bullets are good at work, that’s about it. Each type of grind will be different from a bullet, worth learning. The pinch is the best method for Edit huh, no special characters but post got truncated anyway. Bah I’m not retyping everything, suffice to say you’ll be ok, just stick with it
In my experience, (snuffing since Nov/Dec 2015) I found learning the techniques akin to learning how to ride a bike. You’ll skin your knees… but eventually it becomes second nature.

You will soon outgrow bullets .The toasts by toque are among some of my favorites. There are many factors why the juices start to flow. temperature, just a reaction your body makes or the snuff. Best to be prepared then caught off guard
Pick a few Sir Walter Scott or Abraxas snuffs at random, or read a few reviews and pick the ones that sound good to you. Nothing wrong with starting at the top and working from there.
I say hover over to Mr. Snuff and pick a few snuffs that sound good (I did that). Also, try choosing as many different types and brands as possible. Some snuffs make my nose run more than others. The ones that do are usually moist, coarse snuffs (like Samuel Gawith Elmo’s Reserve I’m snuffing right now). If I’m taking snuff outside and it’s cold, I get a runny nose from most snuffs, but it’s still more severe with coarse/moist ones. Your nose may be different, so experiment and most importantly enjoy!
I have to say that my nose also gets runny all the time. I blow my nose after two or three pinches and taking schmalzlers or coarse grinds in general increases this to one blow per pinch. I think there is large variation between persons/noses, so I would not be too concerned with it. No right or wrong in here.
786 @RCastle, welcome to the forum and to snuffing!
Echo what @snuffsahoy said, your nose gets used to it eventually so that runny nose and clogging are reduced, though not always eliminated. I’ve been snuffing going on seven years and my nose still runs, so…word to the wise, lay in a stock of dark-colored handkerchiefs. I carry at least two (usually more) with me at all times.
Blow away if you need to, no need to sit in discomfort. If you blow it out and want some more, have at it! You’ll find your own way soon enough; everypony’s body is unique, on top of which snuffers tend to be idiosyncratic individuals so everypony has their own set of reactions, techniques, and likes or dislikes. That being said, it is wise of you to seek advice from your senpais; you can avoid common pitfalls and put yr. experiences in a larger context on top of gaining mad knowledge.
Bullets are not the friendliest option for a beginner; I still have problems snuffing from a bullet because the force required to get the snuff from the bullet to my nose is often the same amount required to send it to the back of my eyeballs. If I have a bullet I tap it out onto the back of my hand as you have done. I make an exception for very dry, finely ground snuffs; I tackled American scotches fairly early in my career and I find that such snuffs require much less force to move from the bullet to the nose. As with all things snuff-related, ymmv. Welcome again, I hope your stay here is as edifying for you as it has been for me.
