Röslein Inspired by a description of the ingredients used to make the favourite snuff of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of George III. Queen Charlotte was an inveterate snuff taker and historical records tell us that her favourite was flavoured with Bitter Almonds, Attar Ghul - the Persian for attar of roses - and that ambergris was added to enhance the flavours. Röslein is a moist, demi gros snuff made from Sumatra leaf, flavoured with pure attar of roses from Isparta in Turkey, ameretto di saronno lazzaroni from Italy and ambergris from the Chatham Isles. Ambergris is very strange stuff. Mine resembled a light grey pebble and once ground in a pestle and mortar, the dust had to be suspended in alchohol for four months before it became absorbed and could be added to the snuff flour. Röslein should be on the MrSnuff site next week. Johnny

Roslein is a superb snuff and I expect it will greatly enjoyed by SWS fans; complex but light and refreshing with a long lasting nose and delicious base tobacco. Johnny has done a first-rate job - blending of the highest order.

C

Waiting. This sounds absolutely wonderful, I hope Johnny made enough.

H

Its not on the website yet, but I am awaiting its release eagerly. Its time for another order! Ambergris should make it a very interesting snuff indeed!

Having resisted the urge to try the Abraxas limited edition with ambergris, I’ve decided to splash out on this one. Normally my inclinations are to think “how much? That’s two tins worth of Samual Gawith, that is!” , but this time I decided, yeah - let’s go for it.

M

looking forward to this one

F

Just ordered some. I am STOKED to try it! I hope it gets here soon.

M

And the order is in…

C

50 grams on the way!

So tins of the new Sir Walter Scott Röslein lovingly delivered by the postie on behalf of our chums @MrSnuff this morning. I have to admit that although I’m a huge fan of @Johnny ‘s blends (which to my mind have all been excellent). I did wonder if @abraxas might have pipped SWS to the ‘snuff of the year’ award with the limited edition Prince Regent VSOS; I think that @Johnny has aced it here though ^:)^ The tin note as usual with SWS is heavenly; the attar of roses is probably the most prominent note in there seconded by the almond liquor undertone. The grind is very pleasant too, middle I guess with some finer grains in the mix. Extremely moist, I reckon a spoon would probably be the thing here, but nicely pinchable with a little care. In the nose it’s very silky (as @lunecat and @Abraxas comment) and the delectable tin note aromas are nicely arbitrated by the mysterious fragrance and qualities of the ambergris, the top-note bouquet is complex but not overpowering - just right for frequent use. Once it’s been in the nose a while the base flour of the blend becomes more conspicuous; the rich, full and satisfying tobacco goodness that is well known to fans of @Johnny ‘s blends. Overall very luxurious and regal, I think that Queen Charlotte would have approved! Another excellent and unique offering from the house of Scott – Highly recommended!

Is it possible for me to get withdrawal symptoms from a snuff I’ve yet to try? Well, I think I am. Reading these reviews is making me drool, figuratively, as I wait for my 50gr from Mr. Snuff.

S

It’s ordered plus a few more treats.cant wait for this one.

H

please please please please please please please please POST REVIEWS. please. It only takes one bad one to give newbies completely the wrong impression.

If this is a limited edition, which I would imagine it is, and one bad review stops other people buying it so I can’t get any more then I’m off to post a bad review straight away! The only thing that’s affecting my enjoyment of it is that it’s going down in the tin far too fast considering the price I paid…

S

Another great snuff from sws.If you missed abraxas prince regent then get this. Its the closest you will get to it.but this has a bit more to it.can snuff get better than this?!

H

This is a wonderful snuff that everyone should try while quantities are available. Yes, the attar of roses is the primary scent but it is not overpowering. It has some staying power for sure, the scent seems to last longer than other snuffs and is very enjoyable. Di Saronno lingers in the background but perks up at times. It is a medium grind, moist, has a satisfying nicotine hit, and is indeed silky and velvety. It is relatively sneeze-free, which is interesting given the medium nicotine smack. Highly recommended, get some.

I

Ok had to order some given the good comments and in case there does be a rush on and it all disappears. Be interested to see how it has “a bit more to it” than the Abraxas Prince Regent, which I find hard to imagine being possible, but bring it on. This silkiness and velvetiness seem enticing also.

Just received Röslein today. Got to me here in Colorado in 8 days from Mr. Snuff. To me, it is a beautiful, deep, complex, harmonious, and fully satisfying snuff with a nice nic hit. Röslein is treasure in a tin. Congratulations, @Johnny! Another triumph to add to your long list. And, maybe it’s just me, but I find it to be somewhat reminiscent of Prince Regent, in its own way. I am so happy that I own some of this.

J

I’m finding myself a bit snuff jaded at the moment, not really keen to try much new, just bring on the HDT and the Dholakia White. But this is shaking me out of my lethargy. Time to place an order.

X

Wow, got mine today! Really good! Even if it does have wale shit in it.

I

Just trying Roslein this morning -first impression- and it’s definitely thumbs up pleasant and stangely for me I actually do immediately get the scents of the bitter almond and rose by which I mean the actual ingredients as normally I miss one or more and they are a very nice combination. I think the almond comes through moreso than the Rose. Definitely not as in your face as Abraxas Prince Regent which would make Roslein more often usable. My almost empty Prince Regent jar has lost it’s fresh edge and still it’s very potent with flavour, mainly port/cognac now, fantastic. Roslein seems much milder in comparison and a great alternative. I still find the Prince Regent amazing though. Roslein is amazing also in that I’ve never actually sensed almond so much before such as in cakes or chocolate or even eating actual almonds so I’m impressed that snuff can convey it so well. I’m sure I will have no problem enjoying this snuff and gettting to know it better.

C

My first impression of the tin note was one of florals and marzipan. I’m working diligently on further study. It’s a tough job, but I’m happy to take one for the team =))

I

Yes it is kind of Marzipan I suppose, that being made with almond. I did sort of think that at one stage earlier but I was definitely getting more sort of smokey almond alone. Now I seem to be getting more Marzipan??? Guess it depends where it fits into the rotaion and what has gone before. Excellent study @chefdaniel! Guess it opens the door to all the other nuts, as in flavour of course. Hazelnut, Brazil nut snuff …

C

@I_snuff_therefore___‌ Since I am essentially nuts, I will take it upon myself to work that out. Old Mill Noisette is a nice study on hazelnuts, and the forthcoming Écrous Brûlée is a nut lovers w_t dream. A nut buster so to speak. IM me and I’ll send you some info. I ship worldwide, so no worries. Marzipan, to me, has a liqueur note to it above and beyond toasted almonds. It’s not amaretto, but something equally sweet with that unique note of bitter almonds. I’ll be damned if I can figure out what voodoo/black magic Sir Johnny employed on this beauty, but this is the most fun I’ve had studying since the dean’s daughter taught me anatomy.

C

I spent a lovely afternoon getting to know this marvelous creation from Sir Johnny. My beverage of choice was a large pot of Assam tea with milk and sugar. WOW. Complex. Many layers of scent. Great tobacco. The rose takes center stage in a deft and subtle play off of the tobacco. The almond/marzipan/amaretto nuttiness evolved and weaved in and out, changing with each breath and subsequent pinch. I picked up a hint of apricot and tannin, not from any additions, just a natural fruit scent way in the background. No bitter notes and the nuttiness had a buttery quality. For a floral snuff it has the cleanest finish I’ve yet encountered. That is one of the things that make F&T florals difficult for me; the scents last a long time and seem to invade my taste buds and remind me of my younger days getting my foul mouth washed out with soap. NOT this one! It is delicious in the nose and the residual flavors in my mouth are wonderful. Big, nay huge, pinches made this a nice nicotine bomb without dizziness, but the bigger pinches really helped the overall experience. Calming and serene, a bigger and better experience than with smaller pinches. I bought a 50 gram tin which I intend to save for evenings, and I put two more in my cart. 5/5 stars. Perfect moisture, mill and scenting on some wonderful tobacco.

S

Your experience made me very curious. So I just ordered a tin. The most expensive snuff I ever had but that’s due to the real ambergris I guess. Any health benefits on ambergris worth reporting?

S

Here are some health benefits: http://www.doctorsreview.com/history/amazing-ambergris/ And even with the listed price it’s still cheaper as smoking I calculated…if a 50gr tin can deliver about 200 pinches, compare your price to that of 200 cigarettes and you’ll notice how cheap expensive snuff is! Im sure I will like it as I like St. omer that comes near to it in composition

S

It’s indeed a good snuff now I have it here @lunecat worth the money like cuban cigars. The rose is on the background and not on top of the scents and that’s an art to reach. I Like the amaretto in it it reminds me of the liquor I drink now and then. I Had the amber scent before in De Kralingse BonBon which is a similar snuff, but way more earthy. The grind and texture of Röslein is perfect in my opinion, the snuff in the tin is little springy. It sure is one of the better Sumatra tobacco I had, very well chosen by our blender. I can take this snuff easier as St James Parish blend which is more dry. That’s why I’m playing with the thought of mixing these both snuffs when the tin is halfway. I just went out to post a letter with Röslein in the nose and with a little fresh windy air this snuff is really really delicate.

I

I can only think of one addiction that is cheaper than snuff. bubble wrap. Comes free with everything and, if your habbit gets too bad you can buy it for pretty cheap too.

I

I like this one more now that I have been using it for a while. It’s normally my wake up morning snuff before I have taken any other snuff so that I don’t get any interference with the scent because this is definitely worth getting the full scent and as the tin has gone down I’m getting the Rose coming through more than the Almond and it’s very nice Rose. Almost seems like the scent has strengthened instead of fading as with most other snuffs and that I like in this case. Rising up the favourite chart for me. Seems to me that this would be an excellent snuff to impress new snuff triers with.

S

Can I conclude from the description @Johnny that the tobacco base is “single estate” Sumatra leaf? It is well chosen in combination with the snuff flavor. I Have come to know Sumatra (often used as wrapper leaf in Dutch cigars) as a mild and soft velvet like and tasteful tobacco. The base of Röslein matches my experience with it. Sumatra tobacco was planted by us Dutch around 1850 around Medan on the Deli plantations because of the vulcanic fertility of the soil. Cuban seeds were used and that’s how Sumatra tobacco was born.

R

i just got this on sort of a whim after seeing a lot of good reviews. its like no other nasal snuff i have heard of. in fact it seems more like a dip, it feels like i am taking a dip into my nose, ei same smell and feel as dip. i like it but apart of me wonders if i actually have a nasal snuff and i’m actually sniffing dip.

H

It’s definitely nasal snuff Robb, however, we can conclude that Queen Charlotte would probably have liked dip! :))
