I was very fortunate to acquire a quantity of Ligero leaf from Cuba a few months ago and have blended this with some aged Nicaraguan Seco, Bright Leaf Virginia and Punjabi Rustica to create Havana Toast. A dry, finely milled, slow toasted, high nicotine snuff.
Whoa . I need to get my hands on this!
Great news Sir Johnny
Cuban Ligero should pack one hell of a flavor and nicotine punch. Nicaraguan Seco isn’t exactly a wimpy weed either. A bit of Virginia to sweeten things up and the Rustica provides that nicotine overkill I crave. This sounds like Johnny’s genius is working nights and weekends. I’ll pull the trigger on this order June 1. If there’s any left.
I hate to spoil the party but, if it’s an actual Cuban leaf would the Americans not be able to buy it? Not that I would want to tell anyone ever cause I still want to smuggle in Cuban cigars.
You can get around the customs issue by labelling it as “Ubancay Obaccotay”.
@Mike_B Now that had me laughing!!!
I’ve got 50g Coming to the states. Fingers crossed
I don’t think it will be seized by US Customs. I have gotten the Braniff snuff, Caribbean, the tap box says Cuban tobacco on it. I think they are only looking for actual puros, but you never know.
Good News! Thanks Johnny, order placed.
Why should it be a problem? After all the US Senate is single handedly keeping the Cuban cigar industry in business. Remember 2 years ago when all the mail was being checked by homeland security and all they found illegal was $2 million in Cuban cigars destined for capital hill.
Well were the hell are my Cuban cigars funded by tax payers money!
no Cubans for ferrets.
I want 200 Cohiba Behike please.
NO!!!
While I have not heard of anyone facing sanction beyond confiscation, the fine folks at US Customs are quite clear than no Cuban tobacco is allowed in. They go as far as to clarify that the previous “allowance” for authorized trips is now off. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a\\_id/36/~/importing-cuban-cigars
I am not a Ferret! I am a highly evolved White Weasel!
Also Shhhhh @Sgtjon. SHHH!
Great. Had a basket waiting for completion with something else to choose. Just the job a new SWS. Love something nice to look forward to.
I live in a non-aligned nation. I’ll definitely order some.
I think we’re giving too much credit to the bureaucrats that run our DHS. The one’s I’ve met probably think Havana is in Southern California, contributing to my chronic insomnia (along with the mental giants at TSA). As long as Johnny doesn’t emblazon the label with “Made with Genuine Illegal Cuban Tobacco” in bright red, bold letters we should be okay. Other than the outrageous shipping costs at Mr. Snuff that it will require to get one wee 15 gram tin to the US: 1 x Sir Walter Scott’s Havana Toast Snuff 15g $8.95 BILLING INFORMATION Billing Address (Edit) Daniel Richard Bethpage, TN 37022 United States Payment Method (Edit) Credit/Debit Card (Worldwide) Sub-Total: $8.95 Low Order Fee: $1.50 Royal Mail Airmail(Tracking NOT Included) (): $11.98 Total: $22.43 That’s 115%, or as we say in Tennessee “A HUGE Fu$%!ng Rip Off”
That’s really odd, @chefdaniel. something’s really wrong. Here’s my last order… Products ------------------------------------------------------ 3 x Sir Walter Scott’s Havana Toast Snuff 50g (SWS014) = $71.85 ------------------------------------------------------ Sub-Total: $71.85 Royal Mail Airmail(Tracking NOT Included) (): $8.48 Total: $80.33
I wonder does 3 tins count as 3 strikes and you’re out!? Sometimes the Uk isn’t so crap after all. I went real cheapskate for free delivery but the warehouse is only 20 miles away. Can’t wait to try this snuff. Could be a real like it loads, just good old great tobacco’s.
@Mouse, I just tried it your way and came up with the same total as yours. I then reloaded my original order and came up with the same amount as the first attempt. Unfortunately I can’t swing $80.33 or I’d go with your order. I really want to try this new snuff, but I’m not going into foreclosure to indulge my hobby.
@Johnny oh yes! Will be getting some of this!
Just ordered some, look forward to it
Really Great snuff
Hey @Nikolaos! You changed to pi! I also had no clue what your last icon was. I’m currently dating some one that has a great fascination with pi. Currently dating sounds like it has been a few months but, it has been 6 years.

Hey, I recognized some of those words.
For those who’ve tried both, how does this new snuff compare with Lundy Foot?
@JakartaBoy i highly recommend a try-purchase… Really is veryyyyyy good snuff… it is very close to Lundy foot is you exclude the Cuban and Nicaraguan taste and smell… Dry, slow Toasted, and blended from Sir Walter Scott’s… Whats more???
Another great snuff, its like a cross between lundyfoot and abraxas st casura with Cuban smoky notes.buy it you wont regret it.
I just put in an order for 50 grams, together with 150 grams of HDT. By the way, I tried the Lundy Foot yesterday. I do really like it, but I’m not sure that I’d rate it as much better than HDT, which is my favorite snuff at the moment. I’m always happy to try a new snuff and prepared to invest a bit to do so, but it’s not something I’d buy in bulk at the prices it’s going for. Oh, since there was some discussion on shipping prices, I’d like to say that the shipping to Indonesia on a $44.92 / 200 gram order came to around $11, which seems very reasonable.
Thanks for the peek. Like an upskirt shot. Looks a bit darker than lundy
Yes slightly darker… Has another pinch. I just got it a hour or so ago and so early impression Roasted Nutty Woody flavour or scent if you prefer. I find it very mellow and likeable straight away. I think it’s very easy to take although is quite dry and a little fine. By no means any strong cigar flavour though there does seem to be a strong Lundy Foot connection as others have said. I think it would be quite easy to snuff through a lot of this very quickly it’s so easy on the nose, moreso than Lundy Foot. I used to smoke strong dark fermented cigars and I still love the thought of them and was sort of hoping that this might be like that but I think it’s much smoother and mellower. Mellow is it in a word I think but nice tobacco. Very Mellow. I’d love if Johnny would do something similar but with a stronger fermented darker leaf and yet I still think I would enjoy this one alongside. If Mellow Roasted Nutty Woodiness are your thing then I would advise the large tin or several. I think I could take a lot of this compared to Lundy Foot as I think it holds a bit more interest in the flavour especially the nutty roast aspect. Only my initial opinion of course. It isn’t startling or anything but there’s definitely some kind of likability there straight off. I suspect it will be another one that is great to have around and would be missed if it were to run out. Lovely in my nose just now a few minutes after pinching.
When ever I see you put snuff on display @lunecat it’s always on that flannelish thing. Is that a Kilt?
A table cloth for warming your table?
I think it is the Lune Kilt!
It’s his snot rag
Just received it and all my thanks to @Johnny, I can’t keep my nose out of the tin. Am I the only one to feel a strong chocolate-like taste?
mmmmm, tobacco!
Oh no. If anyone buys one tonight I wont be able to get it. Might cry. Just a little. The 15s don’t count! Okay I guess they do.
Nooooooooo! It’s gone.
I hope more will be made.
Phew, glad I didn’t wait and got my second order in yesterday. Is it really all gone already or just the 50’s? A great launch indeed. After about two days of initially receiving my two little 15g tins (which are absolutely fine as I like the little tins for using other snuffs once they’re empty) I realised I had better get back and grab a 50 as this is defintiely going to be part of my regular daily snuffing. I think it even improved/matured some already after the air has got into it with use. I also bought another 5 Paul Gottard Latakia which is similar but a bit stronger, darker and more fermented but otherwise the same dry semi-fine grind. A little of that added to the Havana gives it an absolutely brilliant extra savoury flavour. I’m totally totally (yes I did say that twice) addicted to this. My snuffing definitely has made a great leap this week.
A very kind gentleman gifted me a nice taste of Havana Toast and I am forever in his debt. It is wonderful snuff. Now I’ll have to be very frugal with it until Sir Johnny decides to sell it in 500 gram drums.
Thank God I don’t have to be frugal with it, at least for now! It doesn’t really lend itself very well to frugality.
I just recently received a 15g tin of this very delicious snuff. I only wish I would have picked up the 50g tin. I 've been smoking cigars for many years and this snuff was spot on.
Yep all out at Mr Snuff, Is there another batch on the go …
Definitely positive up my hooter. I wouldn’t sell my tins of it for a million bucks. Ok I would but not a penny less. Would definitley buy again. Bet the next batch goes even more quickly so best make it a large one Johnny.
Sold out in less than a month, that’s insane. Shame I didn’t manage to get my mitts on a tin… *grumbles*
I have to say, I like Lundy Foot better. The new one is good, but the Lundy Foot has more punch and burn. I also think the flavours are more complex and interesting. Still happy to have got the 50 gram tin rather than the fifteen, and it won’t go wasted.
I was thinking Lunecat was referring to one of his “little samples”. Might as well spill the beans now. I’ll have to hold off on all my Mr Snuff orders until the new baby arrives. That should hurry em up. Just kidding take time and utmost preparation care. I hope it’s another nice tobacco something like Havana Toast but it’s sounding like another out there one. I hope not Turkish Delight. I hate that stuff although if Johnny made a snuff of it I’d probably love it!
My sincere hope is that Sir Johnny is working on a Perique snuff. Perhaps a VaPer for the many briar brothers on this site. A toasted VaPer would put me in Bayou heaven
@chefdaniel He is indeed working on a Perique snuff, he was saying it should hit the stores in amout a month
Great news! @JakartaBoy; I guess I am delinquent in my snuffhouse reading. My bad and many, many thanks for the link.
Sorry new boy question I gather Perique is the tobacco used ?
@Derek_007 Perique From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perique Perique /pəˈriːk/ is a type of tobacco from Saint James Parish, Louisiana, known for its strong, powerful, and fruity aroma. When the Acadians made their way into this region in 1776, the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes were cultivating a variety of tobacco with a distinctive flavor. A farmer named Pierre Chenet is credited with first turning this local tobacco into what is now known as Perique in 1824 through the technique of pressure-fermentation. Production The tobacco plants are manually kept suckerless and pruned to exactly 12 leaves through their early growth. In late June, when the leaves are a dark, rich green and the plants are 24-30 inches (600 to 750 mm) tall, the whole plant is harvested in the late evening and hung to dry in a sideless curing barn. Once the leaves have partially dried but are still supple (usually less than 2 weeks in the barn), any remaining dirt is removed and the leaves are moistened with water and stemmed by hand. The leaves are then rolled into “torquettes” of approximately 1 pound (450 g) and packed into hickory whiskey barrels. The tobacco is kept under pressure using oak blocks and massive screw jacks, forcing nearly all the air out of the still-moist leaves. Approximately once a month the pressure is released, and each of the torquettes is worked by hand to permit a little air back into the tobacco. After a year of this treatment, the perique is ready for consumption, although it may be kept fresh under pressure for many years. Extended exposure to air degrades the particular character of perique. The finished tobacco is dark brown - nearly black - very moist with a fruity, slightly vinegary aroma. The fruity aroma is the result of hundreds of volatile compounds created by anaerobic fermentation of the tobacco. Many of these are responsible for the flavors of fruits and are often found in wine. Often considered the truffle of pipe tobaccos, perique is used as a component of various blended pipe tobaccos, as many people consider it too strong to be smoked pure. At one time, the fresh and moist perique was also chewed, but none is now sold for this purpose. Fewer than 16 acres (65,000 m²) of this crop remain in cultivation. Most Louisiana perique is cultivated by farmer Percy Martin in Grande Pointe, Louisiana. Although at its peak Saint James Parish was producing around 20 tons of perique a year, output is now merely a few barrelsful. Most of the perique used in pipe tobacco is not perique at all, but green river burley that is processed in the same manner as perique. Although the process produces a strong, spicy tobacco, it is a far different product from the genuine perique grown on Percy Martin’s and the Poche family’s farms. Pierre Chenet’s grand daughter, Coralie Decareau, married Celestin Poche in February, 1829, and the Poche family has been involved in the cultivation and processing of Perique tobacco through current times. There are currently only three farmers who grow tobacco commercially in Saint James Parish. While traditionally a pipe tobacco (and still available from some specialist tobacconists), perique can also be found in Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company’s perique cigarettes under the Natural American Spirit brand in an approximately 1 part to 5 blend with lighter tobaccos. These cigarettes are marketed in a black box (Perique Rich Robust) and in a gray box (Perique Rich.) Loose tobacco for rolling is sold by the same company in black pouches. Perique is also featured in the Mysterioso line of cigars made by the Connecticut Valley Tobacconist. Mysterioso is available with a genuine Connecticut shade wrapper, genuine aged Louisiana Perique, and Honduran tobacco. It is the only cigar in the world that uses a perique blend.
Doh! Google is your friend and all that ! thank you. “the truffle of pipe tobacco” Looking forward to this treat
I’m Cajun, born in Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. Unfortunately moved to California as a toddler, but spent every summer there learning how to cook, eat and make whisky. My grand-père rolled his own smokes from Perique, except on Sundays when he smoked Picayune "tailor made’ cigarettes to go with his dozen or so Sazerac cocktails. Powerful stuff, Perique. I currently live an hours drive from the Green River Valley, in Kentucky, and have had my share of their faux, ersatz, artificial, fake, lame attempt at Perique. It’s okay, but it’s not even close to the real deal. I am a confirmed, card carrying VaPer fanatic, and my pipe tobacco cellar is loaded with nicely aging Perique blends. Greg Pease is the pipe tobacco peer of Sir Johnny and Sir Nigel. His Fillmore is, in my not humble opinion, the finest VaPer ever made. I’ve tried my hand at making snuff from Virginia, Burley and Perique and was a miserable failure.
I’m hoping its another toast. Pretty sure its the only type of snuff that gets me off 8-}
Maybe Johnny will look at adding a new toast/scotch snuff to the range in the future!!! But that said with Lundy Foot & Havana toast already out there is there much more you can add to that class of snuff??? If there is I’m sure Johnny or Nigel can think it up.
Lundy Foot and Havana Toast are both absolute best-in-class winners, in my favourite class of snuffs, pretty much. I’d be delighted to see @Abraxas have a go at a strong, natural toast, just to keep the conversation between the two great British artisan snuff makers going. This seems as good a place as any to formally retract a statement I made that Havana Toast and Lundy Foot are similar. I’m very glad to have some of both in my stock, there is quite a difference between them to appreciate.
FOJ is a toast also but not like any other of course! http://theartisansnuffsociety.com/sir-walter-scott-fine-border-snuff Certainly looking forward to these next few SWS. They do sound nosegasmic! Meanwhile I’m trying to learn a bit more about tobacco itself. There seem so many types and preparation styles that the opportuntiy of snuff variety for Toasts or whatever would seem to be very large. Good tobacco flavour is the best tobacco flavouring there is.
I’m scared this was just a one time thing. I want more. Right now I only use it once a day cause I am scared I will never get another one so it is my precious!
Actually I don’t think the Havana toast was initially intended to be a commercial snuff, funny how these things turn out though!
That’s a bit of a bombshell!!! It’s pretty much instantly one of my favourites and seems now that it might never have been?
If these dire straits continue I’m going to have to resort to toasting a few Cohiba Esplendidos and grinding with some of the Nicaraguan Habano Ligero I’ve got hanging in my office closet. Some East Carolina Bright and some of Roderick’s Rustica should make a mediocre sniff while anxiously awaiting Sir Johnny’s magnificent Havana Toast. This drought of his masterpiece toast will make me appreciate it even more. I hope he’ll put it up in bulk.
I was in the supermarket today and explaining about lovely Havana Toast to the pretty young maiden at the checkout and she sort of went “euweee, that’s like from the stone age”. I think I really impressed her, not! Made me laugh anyhow.
Snuff makes me think often about smoking. Why did we start taking inferior tobacco and, rolling it with other crap? Snuff seems by far superior to cigarettes. I just wish I had not smoked a cigarette in my life and, found snuff first.
OK - so I see that this Havana Toast is available as of now ( 8/23/2014 11:43 est ) at Mr. Snuff . I thought reading through many different posts that it was all gone … so … my question is … To order it, or not to order it? ( Let the madness begin … )
If you don’t order it you’ll miss out on one of the nicest snuffs available. Just saying…
If you don’t order it you’ll miss out on one of the nicest snuffs available. Just saying…
I am just hesitant as I currently have 2 orders placed that I have yet to receive, hahaha… ( I’m in NC, USA ) . But given that after starting just 2 weeks ago the war supply I have laid in, and compound that with the rave reviews here … I think i may have to get some coming. ( I need to find a level ground and do a large order - these small orders = murder on multiple shipping costs in so close proximity )
