A good pepper-minty menthol

I am in desperate need of a camphor/eucalyptus free menthol snuff. I want all the peppermint goodness, without the other stuff. Any suggestions? I need to make my order tommorrow…as it takes 3 weeks to get here.

I would suggest Silver Dollar Spearmint. Nice mint flavor with perhaps a smidge of menthol.

Toque peppermint is pretty stout, im sure if you mixed it with some toque menthol you’d get what you’re looking for.

Well, do you want peppermint OR menthol OR both? For straight peppermint I have three recommendations: McChrystal’s Supermint (power), Wilson’s Peppermint (very nice), Toque Peppermint (candy cane). Samuel Gawith have an entire RANGE devoted to just peppermint! Most of these are more mellow. DeKralingse also have a peppermint which I regret to have not yet sampled. For straight menthol, I’m not the best person to ask, but Toque Menthol is straight up menthol, no other flavors. For Wilsons, the same goes for Menthol and Extra Menthol (but NOT Super Menthol or Menthol Plus, these have other scents). For peppermint/menthol, again mot the best person to ask. Toque Snus Ice if you can find it, Glestcherprise Extra, I guess… Maybe some of the Samuel Gawith peppermint family, you’ll have to read some descrptions of those.

Toque peppermint OR Wilson’s peppermint. Both are very nice.

Well, I’ll have to wait until next order now. I couldn’t even get my mint on the list, heres my copy/paste list…and shipping cost me 24 bucks…I HATE living in the US! There is so much more I wanted, but 70 dollars an order is my limit, and I passed it by a couple cents…

@Xander

My dear, menthol can be made of peppermint oils, not always but it can be. Unless in snuff culture it refers to a compound created synthetically or with other varieties of mint. But I am looking for something candy cane-ish, I guess being a woman I’m more prone to the sweet stuff. Thanks for the suggestions though. Shame I’ll need to wait 2 weeks now until next order.

@Vepr Indeed. Menthol is extracted from mint of course, but it is only the pure menthol crystals that are ground and added to menthol snuffs. Peppermint oil has a very fragrant scent that is quite distinct from pure menthol. Subsequently the two can be used separatley or together. Also many who find menthol intolerable find that peppermint, and also spearmint snuffs can provide much of the sinus clearing effect of menthol, but without the strong burning sensaton and frequent menthol rebound effect (sinuses being more congested than they were prior to insuflation). Anyway, good luck in your quest and your explorations. For the sweet, then, I’d recommend the Toque. If you have the inclinaton try the Toque Snus Ice (not really snus) which is sometimes available from Snuffstore.

I prefer spearmint over peppermint. I find it to have more of a sweetness to it. Right now I’m using Wilson’s Spearmint Plus. I’m not sure what the plus is as there it’s not too strong on menthol. It’s nice and sweet with known aromatherapeutic properties.

Or you could buy essential oil of peppermint from a bakery supply and infuse a plain snuff to the strength you like. I did that with bergamot and citrus flower essences and it’s lots of fun. Check out Loranneoils.com for a list of their non-synthetics.

SD Spearmint is wonderful, and so is Toque Peppermint.  Spearmint isn’t quite as true of a peppermint, but it’s still a really good, warm smelling mint.  Toque peppermint is what I kept in my nose for most of the holiday season.  It was wonderful, and just because of the fact that it’s peppermint, there was a slight hint of menthol, but nothing heavily pronounced.

@Mouse I have done the essential oil thing and it worked well.  I was hoping it would mask some of the smell from a homemade batch of snuff that had a strange stink to it.  Now it smells like minty stink.

You’ll be happy with the WoS Crumbs of comfort if you like sweet mint.

@Xander,

Thanks for the explanation…I had no idea it was that complex. I think I’ll go without the menthol, a little too strong for my liking.

And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions.

Toque peppermint is wonderful.

crumbs of comfort is a favorite. It’s got a little more then mint, nothing that stands out it just enhances the mint.

Well thankfully I have Crumbs of Comfort on my order then. So how much difference is there between the regular and extra CoC.

Extra CoC has menthol.

@Xander

Oh damn,

 C’est la vie I guess. Thankfully my husband will take what I cannot. I’ll order the Toque peppermint for myself next time. Or who knows, maybe it won’t be so bad. Besides, my only real run in with a menthol is Red Bull…

And I despise that stuff, except when congested…

Yes, but you said you got the regular CoC, so you should be fine. Its kind of a spicy spearmint. If there is menthol in there, it is very mild as compared to the Extra CoC. For spearmint, I prefer the Wilson’s Country Mint myself. Very mild, slghtly sweet.

I’d pick the Toque over the Wilson’s for peppermint. I found the Wilson’s to be more musty and less fresh, more old peppermint tea and less altiod/candy cane. Also the Molen’s is a more subtle, it’s with the Latakia mix base, and less peppermint, not that it’s bad but it’s far from a refreshing scent compared to the Toque.
