I might be done collecting pipes. Long story short, my uncle has a bunch of nice old ones from when he worked at a tobacco store. He’s got at least one Dunhill, at least two Pete’s, and all sorts of different shapes and sizes of pipes. Sadly, the pipes have fallen into disuse, a few have some serious rim darkening, and all of them are dusty and in need of some serious cleaning. How do you go about cleaning pipes that probably have only been collecting dust for 10-15 years? Also, what is a Sasieni four dot and want sets it apart from other Sasienis?
alcohol dissolves tobacco ,Use a pipe reamer to remove excess cake should leave 1/16 th inch.you don’t want to ever soak a pipe. A soft cloth and some elbow grease will get the job done. For the shank, You should have a shank brush and dip it in a glass full, irrigate the brush often. I just use mouthwash since I don’t consume spirits. For the stem some pipe cleaners if you can get BJ Long bristled, use one of them first, dipped in clean alcohol then use regular pipe cleaners . After cleaning your going to wax the pipe. I use paragon wax,I put it on and wipe it off let rest for some time and give it a good hand buffing. You can get stem polish but if it is badly oxidized you may need a buffing wheel. It is possible to file some teeth marks off after filling use 400 grit sand paper then a 3M pad and give it a good buffing. Buffing pipes bring up the original finish but also destroys the stamping on the bowls.Best of luck to you.sorry can’t help with your other quire
yeah basement_shaman hit the nail on the head.
@basement_shaman Thanks a ton! There’s like 20 some pipes in that collection (from what I saw) so it’d be some work, but I hate to see so many nice pipes so neglected. I’m pretty much going to tell my uncle that I’d be glad to clean them. No good deed goes unpunished.
That covers the pipes, now as his favorite nephew (made more significant since he has no kids), I need to learn about the estate.
