Two of my favourite snuffs are Poschl Gawith Apricot and Ozona Orange. Essentially they appear to be apricot and orange with a bit of menthol. Don’t know what it is about them - but I love the flavour. Unfortunately Poschl seem to choose to add something else - a waxy/oily quality which I think creates congestion and sometimes soreness around the nose (I do snuff quite a lot!). I know menthol is congesting, but others simply don’t have the same effect… I would really like to be able to recreate the exact flavour of these - but using some other non-oily snuffs - like Toque for instance (I also love their texture, moistness and grind). I have tried using various combinations of snuff to blend - but simply can’t get very close. Similar sometimes - but not really close. I would be really interested if anyone can get really close - and what might be the exact balance of ingredients. Anyone already achieved the perfect blend? Anyone willing to have a go? keeping my fingers crossed!
Straight F&T Seville is heavy on the citrus/orange:) Haaha Just kidding!- I was just lamenting yesterday that I was disappointed Seville didn’t have more citrus–I’m going to try adding some grapefruit to it tonight (thanx to Pieter). I don’t have a lot of heavy citrus /orange type experience other than Dutch Windmill Orange Latakia–Maybe that would be a good base to mix some finer, nuetral snuff with (if you dont like that coarse grind) I think that’s an excellant snuff but haven’t mixed it much yet. It seems that the general consensus on this forum is that Pöschl add paraffin wax to their snuffs, in what proportions, I do not know, but that would probably be the elusive secret ingredient.
Menthol snuffs are dime a dozen so the menthol part is a matter of your taste I imagine. I like Hedges L260 “the snuff” but my guess is you’ll be looking for something with the precise grind and menthol level to suit yourself. L260 is almost strong enough to add to a straight tobacco snuff to get the menthol As mixers: for galwith apricot i’d recomend McChrystals apricot, which is a very strong straight apricot in a natural tobacco base. You may wish to put in a bit of F&T Seville to provide body. For Ozona President a major component appears to be Eucalyptus (I’m out so i can’t reference it at the moment). Wilsons of Sharrow S.M. 500 is a very good pure eucalyptus which you could mix in to your taste. I seem to remember a touch of anise and other body flavors there. F&T seville would probably sit under it quite well, as would a pinch of McChrystals Anisette. If you like the poschl snuffs but dislike the waxiness, try Molens de Kralingse snuffs. They’re a similar medium grind - though ground naturally in a windmill! All of them are quite lovely and unique. You may find something good to work as a base - perhaps their orange. Deffinitely worth popping one or two of their snuffs in your next order just to try.
Seville is NOT orange. Its Neroli oil, which I beleive comes from orange flowers not orange fruit. Big difference. QWS Apricot is a fair imiataion of Gawith Apricot, but with less menthol, less or no wax and more of that fake apricot flavor. So to does FUBAR RnR but even more apricot and less menthol, and seems to be a non oil base. Dholakia’s limited edition range has some orange and apricot in them which might also be what you are looking for.
Mullins & Westley’s Jock’s Choice is has a good orangey scent in a medium/fine grind.
What about GH Dry Orange? Not one of my BIG favourites but I do like a pinch now and then.
@Xander, I have some plain snuff sitting with Valentia orange flowers in it, sealed up properly in a glass jar. The flowers are very sweet smelling, especially late in the afternoon, and the bees are very busy in and around the tree. I would like to leave it for at least a month.
Sounds good, Pieter. I did that last winter with lemon flowers and lime flowers on some Toque Natural. It was fairly successful. The lemon flowers had a much stronger scent, so I would do that one again and probably not bother about the lime. I found that the flowers added a lot of moisture to the snuff, so I had to dry it again. I only did it over a few days though, not a whole month. The flowers smell quite differently than the fruits, don’t they? I have an orange tree too, but it did not bloom this year. Now it has aphids so I need to clean it up and get it inside before winter and hopefully it will bloom this year. GH Dry Orange is pretty good. More ‘real’ tasting than Ozona IMO. I think its more of orange zest though. @ toffeenose: Jock’s Choice was wonderful! I’ve not had anything else that quite compares with that. Have you tried the M&W Citrus Delight? I have heard mixed reviews on that one.
Wilsons do Chocolate Orange that is Quiet Nice.
Jock’s Choice is indeed very tasty, but as with Seville it’s flavoured with Neroli oil. It’s not as highly perfumed as Seville though. Wilson’s Chocolate Orange has more of an orangey taste I’d say. It does what it says on the tin - very like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange.
