A bit of information on South African snuff

http://www.euromonitor.com/smokeless-tobacco-in-south-africa/report I will NOT pay the $900.00 to read the full report, but the little blurb in the link is intersting enough. Apparantly Dingler has a 90% share of the SA snuff market.

Is Dingler a SA company? I don’t recognize the name.

Yes, they are, but were bought by Swedish Match a few years ago, mostly for their strong market position of pipe and RYO tobacco, if i remember it correctly. Swedish Match S.A. were bought by Philip Morris in 2009, just like the report states. The reasons behind this, are still in the shadows. But I presume it was more of a strategic decision by Philip Morris, as the consumption of (smoking) tobacco is rising tremendously throughout Africa.

@xapken Yes, they are most well known for the Taxi and Magnet brands. @MiB according to Swedish Match they are in a joint venture with Phillip Morris “to commercialize smokefree tobacco products.” That’s sounds like a cock & bull story to me too. http://www.swedishmatch.com/en/Our-company/Company-history/Swedish-Match-AB/ One thing it does not mention on this page but I have found elsewhere, is that Best Blend (maker of the South African Wilsons Menthol) was also aquired by Swedish Match at the same time and sold as part of Swedish Match south Africa to PM. Both are now part of Phillip Morris South Africa Group. I guess this explains why the new Wilsons tins are just like the small Taxi ones.

Found it Xander.

thanks

I changed the catagory from “Articles” to “General”

Dinglers is a very old SA company and well known for their pipe tobacco. I regularly smoke their 1904 which is about the best pipe tobacco made here. As for snuff (and pipe tobacco) things are so mixed up that I’m sure the shareholders don’t know anymore what’s what and who’s who.
