A bit of a snag. how to work through?

With my latest order, I’d tried Red Bull, SG Dark Cob, SG No.1 HM and SG Irish ‘D’ Kendal, and fell in love with Lowen-Prise while still doing Packard’s Club during the day. I was finding a rhythm and a glob of Irish D fell out, too big I knew, but there it was, so I snuffed it. Burn, no problem. I managed to keep it without blowing and just some sneezing, so far so good, but woke up totally shut down. Tried Red Bull to reopen and it seemed to just make it worse. I’ve been running, doing a lot of sneezing and blowing all day. I’ve washed it out with Ayr, long time clear, but am sensitive now. Too much information? Any recommendations? Rest a while or continue with less? For how long or till when? Ideas? Advice?

I’ve found taking very small pinches helps. I’ve got to get to know a tobacco before I pump it in. Some clog me but I haven’t decided yet if it’s the tobacco bases or the flavorings that bother me. I’m sure that would be the case with menthol too. I’ve heard it’s worse for most people. Also, I don’t think it’s a bad thing to blow it out when you feel you should. If you want more just fill it back up. That’s even the fun part. Your nose might be telling you something. The nicotine goes in pretty quickly so you probably won’t lose much of that either.

Thanks for the answer. I need to get better control of the amounts, seems like I’m either too short or too much. I’ll work on that pinching, don’t have that together at all. Thanks again.

I’d suspect that the lowenprise might clog you up. I don’t tend to do poschels much even the ones I really like because they seem to clog me up. Other snuffs will clog me up but never completely if I use the poschels frequently during a day I’ll find my nose will clog up completely I’ll feel like I have a wax plug in my nose. I’ve heard that the poschels use parafin wax in their snuffs, which I suspect causes the clogging. I think that because menthols do not clog me up and plenty of other coarser ground snuffs don’t clog me terribly either. P.s. I’ve also noticed the longer I snuff the less negative nose effects I get. Less sneezing and less watering as well as less clogging.

might just be me, but whenever I feel kinda stuffy, I take a small pinch of a scotch or sweet scotch. These tend to make my nose run/cause drip within a few minutes, but after I blow it out, I actually feel kind of “cleaned out” - it’s a different feeling from when I’ve had a menthol, not that “clear and cold”.

I find a difference between the way English and German Snuffs work on my sinuses. The English tends to dry them up nicely, but has a slight backwards drip at times. The German ones will either clear me up quickly, or stop the works like you wouldn’t believe.

Try discovering the gag reflex of the larynx were it meets the sinus. I mean… I never knew such things could happen. In fact I discover somthing new in every snuff I take.

I call it the ‘menthol paradox’. They can be very congestion causing despite the fact that we tend to take them to open up the sinuses. I frind a dry, fine snuff such as a Scotch or HDT is actually much better at keeping things open. These days I tend to use menthol just as part of home blends.

Thank you all. I am back to using the Irish D and its not causing a problem. Perhaps its the menthol rebound. lol, I was really liking Lowen-Prise. What rationale do you use to mix, and in what. Somebody told me that before, to mix the menthol down, now its a priority, at least before I do any more menthol.

I use menthol rather like salt - as a flavour enhancer. You would be surpised what it can add to a blend when used at between 1-10% or thereabouts. Obviously, the big variable is what menthol you use; something like Lowenprise, which is on the milder side, could be used more liberally than a powerful brand like J and H Wilsons Medicated 99. I would experiment with both, starting with very small test batches so as not to waste snuff. Two blends I use a lot are: 9 parts JH Wilsons SP to 1 part medicated 99 and, slightly more involved; Toque Original, Rose and Vanilla in equal parts with Gletcher or Lowenprise. These work for me but I would suggest using even smaller ratios to begin with to see what suits your nose and pallate. When I have the blend I like, I mix in an old WoS plastic cannister with a wooden spoon and let the flavours develop for a few days.

Thanks. I’ll start mixing when I get the little plastic containers with my next order. I’m convinced that, at least for me, the menthol can’t be more than a condiment. Does mixing different consistencies matter, and if so for the better or worse? For now, I’ve been just sticking with one at a time rather than bouncing around all over the place, trying a lot in a hurry. Dholakia Chocolate was a lesson in effects other than nicotine, so I’ve dropped that preconceived notion. My guess is that with flavors, and pretty much everything else, its a try it and see. Apparently, it will take years to sort all this out, so I might as well relax and take my time. At least this way I know what’s doing what, and when I mix it have a reference in mind where the mix is coming from. Anyway, thanks again.

You can mix any snuffs, regardless of grind or moisture. I mix NTSU - very course and dry - with various toques and love the results. There is only ever one rule in all this and thats that you enjoy what you are doing. Snuff as a condiment to other snuffs is a good way of looking at it. Likewise, other strong snuffs like kamal, Royal George or US Scotch can be toned down with milder snuff and also add their own distinctiveness to blends.
