So, what happened this year? There have been plenty of eventful things to happen in 2014. We saw the surge of Old Mill snuffs (which I am certainly glad for.) We also saw the release of the coveted Abraxas Prince Regent (which I unfortunately did not enjoy!) So what did you guys enjoy (and/or dislike) about “2014 in Snuff”
I found snuff this year. It started off slowly in March with some fruit and floral snuffs from Samuel Gawith. I didn’t enjoy them, but decided to come back to snuff in late summer and discovered White Elephant; the rest is history. I went a little overboard with placing Mr. Snuff orders, but all those orders helped me chisel out a starting point for discovering what I like. Andrea is the best by the way. I placed a number of orders with Old Mill and discovered a true asset to the snuff community in @chefdaniel. The man is a true gentleman that is generous, creative, and has true passion for snuff and sharing it with others. I placed a couple direct orders with Toque and found a lucky sixpence in my first order. Thanks to @Roderick for being a class act and exhibiting such gracious generosity. I still can’t believe that happened, as I never win anything. I have met a number of great people on this forum and learned and shared a lot. I made my first donation to the forum earlier this month in honor of all these newly formed friendships. I lost my father in June. He was my best friend and I miss him. The greater snuff community has provided me with enjoyment and a means to pass the time; and for this I am thankful. Lastly, the year is ending on a high note with the release of Old Mill Solstice, a truly wonderful way to enjoy the season and bring the year to an end. Cheers!
It was the year I discovered plain snuffs…before this year it was non-mentholated scented snuffs for me. Last January I placed my first order for HDT and have been accumulating unscented since then. It’s been a lot of fun playing around in this particular sandbox, and plains have now become my go-to. I’m guessing '15 will be the year I discover the often-praised Old Mill line of snuffs.
I discovered some great new (for me) ingredients to add to the home ground snuff. Pennyroyal, spearmint, fennel, caraway, cumin, sage and a few others. :bz
Four posts in and no-one has mentioned Havana Toast and St James Parish! I had to rectify that oversight.
Havana Toast is excellent, and I’ve been meaning to try St James Parish
Blah, blah, blah! The future comes at me so fast that I haven’t a thought of the past. All I know is that the first thing is first and the last thing is last. In the distance where last is first is the place that we will all find rest.
I discovered the fine Old Mill snuffs in 2014. Also, even though I had tried Mc C’s O&G before, I’d never tried any of their other snuffs. After ordering a bunch of them, and a box of the 12 mini tins, its one of my favorite brands. Fresh scenting, nice base tobacco, just the right amount of moisture. I’m glad I discovered them. I especially like the hops. Is it the same as the famed Hopfen? I don’t know, but its very good nevertheless. Other than that, I re-upped my S. Gawith Rappee style snuffs, Black, Menthol Black, KB Plain, Lavender, Princes and Cob. Not new snuffs at all, but I’m not looking for anything new I suppose.
My Guardian Angel got me the essential equipment to mill snuff; a three barrel bomb maker. The 40+ tobacco blends I had sitting around have now been turned into snuff. What used to take a week with my feeble flour mill now takes a day or two at most. I had some sieves made, stacked, from 400 microns down to 100 microns, plus a 75 micron screen that only air will pass through. I replaced my broken down barrels with new ones, and had a few cedar caskets made for aging weed. The liquor store thinks I should have 9-1-1 on my speed dial in case of liver failure; (they think I might be drinking all this booze). They’d likely be pissed if they knew I was dumping it on tobacco (minus quality control sips). I discovered NB and TPS Madras snuff, Bernard Gekachelter Virginie, GH Kendal Brown, Abraxas Prince Regent and SWS Roslein. I’ve never liked floral snuffs until those two masterpieces came along. Pure freaking GENIUS. And, (drum roll please), I got a sixpence in my Christmas Pudding and Roderick made my nose very happy.
I missed 3/4 of this year hospitalized, My advice stay health! As for new snuff by our very own @Johnny - Havana Toast & @chefdaniel -Black Velvet, Dreamcatcher, Yvette. Both Men are gifted snuff blender! ^:)^ I thank you both
I discovered snuffing at the beginning of the year and had temporary TAD insanity (much to my wife’s chagrin) but aftersome months and much snuffing I found my home base, as it were. Now I know my go to snuffs and still try one or two new ones when I re-order my SG plain/coarse/moist friends. I’m working my way up to buying in bulk. I managed to kick the cigs, which was monumental to me and I retired from the silent service. All in all an eventful year. Fair winds and following seas to everyone in the new year. Run silent, run deep.
Non-snuff related, but the best bit of 2014 for me was my wife getting out of the hospital yesterday just in time for Christmas. Truly a blessing (although Limoncello is a close second)
