10 Newbie Questions for the Snuff Gurus

  1. What’s the Best/Easiest technique? 2. Do I want the snuff to drain in my throat, or not? 3. ^ If so, do I spit the drain out or swallow? 4. ^ If not, how long do I leave it in my nose before I blow it out? 5. What size pinch should I take the first time? I’ve read on here; The size of a pea or pencil eraser. 6. Nasal lavage or not? i.e. Neti Pot or Saline Rinse? 7. Snuff in one nostril or two? 8. Is snuffing healthier than smoking? 9. Will I get addicted? 10. If I snuff in public are people going to think I’m doing drugs?

@lunecat So, do I say “screw IT” and snuff in public anyway or what?

  1. i like using all methods for different snuffs, i have found the most effective method recently to be scooping it with my finertip, this causes hedges to make my eyes water though haha, so is only to be used alone for me :stuck_out_tongue: otherwise, i tend to prefer boxcar- curl your forefinger round the tip of the thumbnail to create a little box that holds snuff and protects from wind. finer snuffs i like to flick into my nose with a snuff spoon, or use off the back of my hand, but boxcar works too. 2. snuff will drain into your throat- we call it throat drip, and it can be a little harsh depending on the snuff and you getting used to it. (i dont think you will get much drip from the four listed in a different thread). 3/4. i swallow it, i keep a drink on hand for snuffs more likely to drip uncomfortably. and as for blowing out, your nose will decide when its time- if you either wish to clear the tubes, or it will begin to run. probably more often the latter particularly as your nose isnt used to snuff. 5. go for a pea, if you feel like more do more. it definitely varies, based on the snuff and yourself. 6. i dont use neti pot, but wouldnt mind trying one. i usually just unblock in the shower i have every morning with a menthol snuff, because as i dont snuff while im asleep my nose gets filled up (it blocks up a lot without me snuffing, i have messed up tubes from incidents when i was a little younger). i did find a saline nasal spray to be useful when i had one though. 7. both usually, for more effect, but i often use one because of my deviated septum. sometimes it cant sniff anything up, others it just rockets the stuff to my brain. sometimes i get lucky. 8. as im not in any health profession or anything i have to add disclaimer here saying my research is based on my obsessive compulsive need to research the hell out of something before i do it. anyway, i found that it seems to be far safer. 9. addicted in the same way as nicotine, perhaps, but based on experience not as addicted as smoking. though once you find your favourite scents they may be a different matter :stuck_out_tongue: 10. depends where you are. im in the UK, so i pretty much get away with it unless theres a younger kid around*. i prefer snus in public though, less mess, quicker to do, and lasts longer (but snus use pretty much eliminates nicotine feeling from snuff). Anywhere you are uncertain, i say keep labelled tins on you. * im an argumentative soul anyway, so anybody having a go at me for it is welcome :wink:

@firestarter0 Thank YOU… VERY Insightful!!!

need anything else or clarification, just ask! if i dont know the answer, id love to find out anyway haha. its how i am. most of snuff use is to do it how you see fit, based roughly on the norm.

No, you answered everything to a “T”! Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to help me on my journey. I’m JUST waiting on my Snuffs and Patrick Collins snuff box to get here.

ooh, a patrick collins, im jealous! i dont have a real snuffbox yet, closest i has was a plastic mrsnuff one that broke. i must get one.

I’d post a picture of the one I ordered, but I don’t know how to post a Pic on here… Could you help me with that, too?! Sorry I’m SUCH a ROOKIE! LoL

the row of icons on the text box we are typing in to leave comments has an image button, you can use images hosted on different sites. im not sure how to upload straight to here, so ive used flickr in the past.

@firestarter0 Nevermind… I JUST figured it out! LoL Well… Here it IS!!!

I agree with @Firestarter0 on the addiction part. I used to smoke minimum 1 pack of cigarettes a day and when I didn’t have any it was kinda rough. Now that I hardly ever smoke cigarettes and stick to the occasional pipe and mainly snuff, when I don’t have a pipe or snuff it’s not even comparable to the “need” or want created by cigarette addiction. I just enjoy my snuff when I feel like it and it doesn’t control me.

Just had an annual physical. I told the doctor I smoked a pipe and used snuff. On the report the doctor labled my tobacco use as ‘non-addicted tobacco disorder’, lol.

Yeah @md363 I’m the same, when I’m bored and at home I can snuff 10 grams in a day, but when I’m at work and distracted I only feel the need for one pinch every hour or two.

  1. Some people pinch all snuffs. Some people back-of-hand/boxcar all snuffs. Some people spoon all snuffs. Some people find a technique changes dependent on a the type of snuff being used. There are dozens, if not hundreds of threads on this very question in the " Snufftaking Advice, Tips, and Techniques" category. Experimentation is the best way to find the answer that is for YOU. It really comes down to personal preference. 2. I prefer not, but some do. Sometimes the situation demands it. It really comes down to personal preference. 3. I prefer to spit if its convenient. In some company this is not appropriate. Usually, a nose blowing prevents drip in the first place. It really comes down to personal preference. (Are you noticing a pattern in my answers yet? :wink: ) 4. As long as its comfortable. If I’m really enjoying a snuff, and it gets runny, but I’m sitting alone at home, I might let it run down my face to forestall blowing in order to achieve maximum time enjoyment. Or it could be irritating or tedious/overpowering/noxious or you just want a different snuff, so you want it out right away. Again, it’s a personal thing… 5. Depends on the snuff. A pinch for me is as much as I can grab between my thumb and forefinger (some prefer the middle finger). One for each nostril. Some split the pinch between both nostrils. For a schmalzer sometimes I spoon it, sometimes I make two big piles (maybe 3 times the size of my pinch) on my hand and snuff from there. For a gwayi such as Taxi, or a Rappee such as London Brown, I usually just stuff it in until the nose is packed full, and I look like I was in a Bavarian snuff-taking competition. Once again, experimentation (and reading others disussions on the forum) will help you find the technique that suits YOU. You know the line by now: “It really comes down to personal preference.” 6. Some are religious about it, some don’t bother about it at all. For awhile I used my Neti pot daily, now maybe once or twice a month. A good blow in a hot shower usually suffices for a daily clean out. Sometimes I follow up either practice with some cotton swabs and swab it out. I’m just going to abbreviate from now on: I.R.C.D.T.P.P. :stuck_out_tongue: 7. Both of course, unless one is blocked or otherwise incapacitated. 8-X 8. Yes. Absolutely. Without a doubt in my mind. Probably anywhere from 100 to 1000 times safer, if not absolutely safe. Nicotine raises heart rate and blood pressure so if you have heart issues, that may be a concern. If you’re already a smoker, than you are making a much safer alternative. The only other health concerns might be acute ones, such as irritation, congestion, and maybe a pimple here and there if you’re not cleaning well enough. 9. Again, if you’re already addicted to nicotine, then there is only the question of making a transition. Personally, I found the combination of snus/snuff made smoking superfluous so I dropped it without much difficulty. My nicotine tolerance has gone up, but that’s because I don’t really resist dosing myself like I did with smoking because I don’t feel guilty about it. Having said that, judging from anecdotal evidence from reading everyone’s stories on this site for the past four years, the addiction is not a “monkey on the back” kind of one like smoking can be. The cravings are not quite the same or as demanding. If you are new to nicotine, I would not be overly concerned. The amount you get from a pinch of snuff is much less than a whole cigarette. The frequency of doses will increase the onset time of addiction, but still that could take years, in my opinion/experience. If addiction of any kind is upsetting to you, than snuff may not be for you. IMO, Since snuff is relatively harmless, then what then is the harm in addiction to something that is harmless, and in many cases therapeutical and very enjoyable. 10. Maybe. Every situation and population/individual will react differently (usually indifferently in my experience). Culture and stereotypes affect people’s opinions and prejudices. If it becomes an issue, it’s now your job as a snuff ambassador to educate them. :wink: Stick around and read. There’s plenty to learn, and experience is the best teacher.

WOW… Thanks, Xander! Sorry for all the Newbie questions. I’ve been reading AND learning a lot on here, but just wanted to hear from a few of you Snuff Gurus! AND I GOT IT… “It Really Comes Down To Personal Preference.” LoL :wink: I will keep you ALL updated as to when my Snuffs arrive and I WILL keep reading and learning. I wear a Courts and Hackett (Keith Richards) Death’s Head Skull Ring and I’m thinking of taking hits from the eye sockets! They look to be the PERFECT depth and size for taking Snuff Hits.

why can’t I upload a Picture now…???

@JohnS_1969 ex-smoker here, and the one thing I notice about snuff is that is as @Xander says it is not as demanding as cigarettes. By that I mean when I was a smoker I would smoke on the hour every waking hour, snuff is just something that is available to me, but there is no punch card. Sometimes I can go several hours and not even notice I haven’t had any snuff. Sometimes I will have a new snuff in my rotation and it’s particularly new and nice and so I may take pinches more frequently, but even that settles down after I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

@JohnS_1969 snuff addiction (or snus) is nowhere near as bad nor demanding, because snuff lacks the evil highly addictive chemicals they put in cigarette tobacco. Nicotine just wasnt addictive enough so they found better drugs to keep you hooked. Google other addictive ingredients in cigarettes. I’m a pro smoking advocate if that’s what makes you happy, but you can make much nicer, non chemical ciggies from a good virginia tobacco.

There we GO!
