What snuff did you bin today?

A thread for sharing your experience of stale or otherwise unusable snuff.

Regrettably, after closer inspection I decided to get rid of this old 50 g tin of 41 Photo Himtaj Black. The snuff looked normally, but the musty smell indicated it was stale.
A downer, because I really wanted to try this…

@volunge - I’ve disposed off 6 x 50 gm tins since I had the same issue. Seems like this is not a snuff which can be stored. The Himtaj Golden however is great even from more than a year back.

Is it the snuff or is it the tins that are the issue? What if the snuff were transfered to glass bottles when you get them?

@newbiesnuffer, I am excited by Himtaj Golden, it’s very enjoyable snuff, and my tin is older than 3 years.

@ar47, I bought a few tins of really old snuffs at reduced price from mysmokingshop. To make the long transit story short, the parcel was stored under damp conditions for almost a year before I finally got it…

Apparently 41 Photo Himtaj Black is much moister than other Indian black snuffs, it contains less oils and different alkalis than 6 Photo, though I can’t tell for sure, because I didn’t dare to take a pinch in the end.

I have never had any problems with 6 Photo snuffs. There were some issues with metal tins, the seam (juncture?) is their weak side, but the snuff ages really well. It’s stale-proof. 6 Photo blacks are prone to moisture loss only (to some degree). Dholakia (and FUBAR) are quality snuffs, too.

6 Photo snuffs in 200 g tins are packed in plastic bags, so I didn’t bother to decant my Super Kailash into glass. It keeps good in original package.

I’m close to trashing my Elmos Reserve. Tried letting it breathe…still smells like shitty artificial vanilla flavoring. Makes me feel sick just smelling it.

@Captainblackboogers, smells like shitty artificial vanilla because it IS shitty artificial vanilla, artificial vanilla or tonka flavoring. Elmos smells exactly like cheap vanilla car air fresheners. In fact the similarity is so strong that I would bet they are using basically the same scenting agent. I actually enjoy Elmos in great moderation and often in a mix, but I imagine I would prefer a naturally tonka scented snuff, something I have not tried yet. I do recall reading somewhere, probably here, that Elmos is made with artificial tonka scent. I believe this is the scent used in cheap automotive air fresheners, or near enough. Anyway, before you toss it you should try using small amounts in blends. I recommend mixing 5 parts plain schmalzler, such as Poschls Perlesreuter or Schmalzler A or Sternecker Echt Fresko, with 1 part Elmos and 2 parts chocolate snuff, preferably Dholakias Swiss Chocolate. THAT is actually delicious.

I like messing with mixes. The other night In a desperate attempt at making some good use out of it mixed a tiny bit of Elmos Reserve  with some KB original, some MCchrystals Aztec and a little Gletscherprise. Can’t stop pinching it.  I think the tonka and chocolate compliment each other really nicely.
I guess I’ll just keep the Elmo’s around a little bit longer.

Purchased at a discount, old stock. Got it musty with 41P Himtaj Black.

@volunge why did you bin it exactly?

It was mouldy. I’m curious, how old was that snuff.

Those were probably menthol crystals.

@Epitango, I wish they were. My first thought was salt/alkalis crystals, so I took a pinch. Alas, mould…

With the oil and menthol it can still mold? I have a tin like that, but labeled Gold not Extra. Got it from MrSnuff (purchased as Extra) It smells like sour mash whiskey, which is a smell from fermentation. Curious if mine might be molded as well? Is that what it’s supposed to smell like? I like the snuff but don’t want to get sick

@ar47, I bet yours is fresh. The smell you described is typical of spearmint (just took a pinch of SG Spearmint Gold for a calibration).
Gold is the new name of this snuff. The names and labels changed relatively recently (2017?; please correct me, if I err).
I got mine from another vendor and expected it to be dried out. I don’t blame the vendor, improper storage is at fault. The same story as with the aforementioned binned Himtaj Black…

@volunge thanks for the feedback. Sniffing away:) mine is a lighter color than your pictures

@ar47, just got a reply from the manufacturer (send them the code last week and told my guess about snuff being old). That particular box of GP Extra was produced in… would you believe it? 2011. Wow!

I will probably bin my tap box of gawith original (apricot)…because its vile

I thought with the oils and menthol in the German snuffs that one their qualities is being microbial resistant. That’s not what I’m witnessing here on this thread

Update on old GP Extra issue.

Got a generous reimbursement from Poschl today - two boxes of Gletscher-Prise Gold. I really wasn’t after it when I contacted them, just wanted to know the mfg year of that old snuff I got from retailer, out of pure curiosity.

Lovely customer care this.

Binned a F&T Princes 25g tin last week and a WoS Best Dark today. Both were all corrosion under their tape. The Princes took the prize with oozing black liquid coming through the otherwise-sealed shut lid. The Best Dark I got open but there was some strange clumping (and the snuff around the corroded edges was the color of the corrosion). I scooped a bit of the center of the tin out but sniffing it smelt like a burst battery (same as the Princes) I was looking forward to the Best Dark. Luckily @SammyD13 helped out with the Princes  Edit: a bit of a wake up call that I should get any snuffs with moisture out of these tins. I keep most of my snuff in glass, just in glass while still in the tin X_X
