1840 book - A Pinch of Snuff: anecdotes of snuff taking, with the moral and physical effects of snuf

Came across this while researching some other stuff online. It’s tremendously arch and over-written in the style of the day. But there are some nice bits about the different styles of snuff, and what Fribourg and Treyer were like at the dawn of the Victorian era.

I have read that, I think on Google books. It was very interesting, to say the least.

Here’s one not found on the Modern Snuff page - maybe because it’s about all forms of tobacco, not just snuff: Nicotiana; or, The smoker’s and snuff-taker’s companion; containing the history of tobacco; culture - medical qualities and the laws relative to its importation and manufacture: with an essay in its defence

@ParlousState thank you for the link, I will surely read it soon. Maybe we should make a “library” thread dedicated to books, so we can have all these in one place.

@Gilliat

There’ s already a Library section in the forum, you can find it here http://www.snuffhouse.com/categories/snuff-house-library and it’s full of interesting articles and books regarding snuff & tobacco in general.

Wow! Thanks for posting this. I’ve noticed many Georgian through very early Victorian writers are overly flowery and obviously thought themselves terribly clever. I think they really toned it down and became more practical to the point that they gifted us with Charles Dickens. Like some of Surtees’ stuff, though, this still manages to be fun to read- although I did want to reach through history and punch this pseudonymous writer for such a terrible and overly “clever” introduction. I’m going to have to look for a hard bound copy of this for my library… okay, it’s just a big bookshelf. I don’t really have a library… yet.

It will probably be very expensive if you can find it! Surtees: who is that?

Surtees… can’t remember his first name but he was about the same era. Wrote a novel called Jorrock’s Jaunts and Jollities. It was fun to read.
