Snuff in Holland

GentlemanGentleman Member
edited April 2012 in General
I'm going to Holland for a week next month on business (Hoogeveen, to be more specific). As such I wan't to buy, try and bring back with me as much snuff as possible! The problem is that I wouldn't even know where to begin to look. Is Snuff taking widespread enough over there for snuff to be sold in petrol stations? If not, could I get it in town? Or is it so obscure that it's only in specialist and very hard to come by shops? Would appreciate any help and advice given.

No idea myself but the Molen mills are 2 hours drive away in Rotterdam. Get a couple of kegs worth of snuff! :D

I don't know if that's out of the question, but you're allowed to go in and see the production of the snuff and recipes and buy snuffs.
  • Just check with UK customs as although there is no duty here in Blighty I am not sure if some officious Cosser might get uppity as it is tobacco?

If I'am to understand you really won't find anywhere better to pick up snuff then your mail box.
  • I was about 1.5 hours from Rotterdam, and found the train ride to visit deKralingse snuff mills a very worthwhile trip!

Last time I was in Holland it was not possible to buy any snuff in tobacco shops. They did not even know what I was looking for.
  • @ Gentleman and Uwe: Snuff in Holland is very rare. With luck you can find some Pöschl in specialised shops.

@ Gentleman: I will gladly welcome you at the snuffmills in Rotterdam and show you around.

I've heard that Holland has got a special mood on dream products. It's a particular country on Europe, sitting beside Van-gogh museum smoking some rich product with a Molens Macuba, the port on morning...

It's a tourist attraction. And it would be fun to talk about it more but this is not the place. Though yeah it would be super fat to sniff super fresh Macuba in the Van Gogh museum.

  • I visited the Van Gogh museum about five years ago.  It was a deeply spiritual experience.  (And no, that was not due to anything other than the power of Vincent's work.)

I don't believe you PipenSnussnSnuff. I thinking the lighting had a little bit to do with it as well as your brain and spirit. Just saying....

@Wingcamnut I wouldn't be surprised. I've never really brought copious amounts of snuff back with me from my travels before as it's been quite problematic to even find the stuff. But i'll try finding out if there is any red tape and if so I'll post the information here for the benefit of others.

@Uwe Damn, for some reason I was very much hoping that it'd be the opposite.

@Snuffmiller I will most certainly take you up on that very kind offer! I'll send a private message your way within the next couple of days to find out more information.

Thanks everyone for the useful replies :)

  • I'm envious of anybody that goes to visit Jaap's mills. This is something that is certainly on my bucket list.
  • For some reason I thought snuff was quite popular in Holland--it seems not.  So UK and Germany seem to be the main centers of snuffing.
  • I think its probably most popular in Poland, and also pretty high in Switzerland (speaking within Europe of course).
But for manufacturng, yes, England and Germany seem to have the most.

awwww I'd LOVE to go there and snag some molen's Gingerbread or Mettaijer!  MMMM!
  • Am I imagining things or was snuff outlawed in Poland for a short while fairly recently?
  • @Xander: Don't forget Bavaria!

Some idiots read an old WHO article about snuff, in which this product was told to be dangerous. It was about oral snuff, but they translated it for nasal that's the story.
  • Snuff is quite popular here, quite a few use it, and 99% know what it is. But this is an ex mining area, but even on my travels around England, most northerners are famliar with it more than those daaaaahhhn saaahfff.
