It’s usually pointless to try to reason with someone who has decided to let an authority figure, of whatever stripe, do their thinking for them. It can be very frustrating when the one who has turned over their reasoning powers is someone you care for. Unfortunately, about all you can do is to gently make it clear that you will do as you see fit, and then make every effort to avoid discussing the subject further.
