Some of the problem in re-creating the old recipes may have to do with finding strains of tobacco that are adequate substitutes for leaf no longer available. It seems to me that the vintage recipes depended more on the scent characteristics of various types of tobacco, and less on added fragrances. Case in point: Santo Domingo. I’ll bet it took a long time to locate and acquire just the right sort of dark, fire-cured leaf to replace the Cuban from the original recipe.
